"Stropping" My Grandfather Used To Do It.
« on: December 14, 2012, 12:13:29 AM »
Some memories take me into my youth.

Thinking about the local barbershop were my dad took me to get a "Flat Top" or what was called a "Crue Cut".

Both very popular and simple styles in the late 60's. Everyone had one or the other in my home town.

The place that my dad took me was my Grandfather's barber shop.

He was a Barber by trade and seeing as how my dad had married the "Barber's" daughter, it was logical that he would take me there for my haircuts.

An odd memory comes out of being there. My Grandfather used to use a straight razor for giving a shave and before every shave he had this long black leather strop that he would use. One hung from each chair.

He would take that razor, pull the strop tight, and strop away back and forth for about ten strokes.

Those razors must have been sharp after he got done with them.

I have looked for a strop like the ones he used but they just don't exist.

What I have found is that you can make your own strop with some polishing compound and almost any flat surface.

(a wooden board, a piece of MDF or particle board, a sheet of glass, your jeans, a strip of cardboard, an Armani suit jacket sleeve)

Almost anything can be used as a strop if you charge it with a polishing compound.

It might not be quite as good as my Grandfather's strops but it will be good enough.

If your knife is up to the challenge, you can even shave with it once you are done.

 ;)  ;D ;D

O_P ,, I actually own the first one you posted.

The strops are all excellent but the ones I remember where about 4" wide and about 4 feet long.

They were black and shiny.

They hung freely from the chairs and had no firm back to them.

They only looked that big because you were so small. ;D

Mine came directly from the barbers chair. It was new, just being hung, and when I asked where I could get a straight razor and strop, the barber (old family friend, gave me my first hair cut) gave me one of his along with the strop. It came with a lesson on it's proper care and use. He's long gone, but I still have that first razor, and the strop. I don't actually use that razor any more, having acquired higher quality ones since then, including one that was my grandfather's with an ivory handle, and the one I posted the image of here. The strop is still in use, hanging from a hook in my bathroom.

You can find all different types of strop's along with strop dressing here   http://www.sharpeningsupplies.com/Strops-C11.aspx?gclid=CIGrwq_RmrQCFeGDQgodIn8AvQ

Scroll down about half of the page for the belt type you are thinking about.

My father was a barber, died when I was 5 years old but I can still remember the smell of his place.

I remember my mother had the strop he used but don't know where it is now.... I should ask  :)

OK, this has been driving me crazy so I have to say something. Shouldn't it be stropping instead of stroping?
