Creating Full Monty like workspace in other KDE distros
« on: December 13, 2012, 05:13:07 PM »
I am a PCLinuxOC-Full Monty user. I have a client who is new to Linux and as such as decided with Kubuntu 12.10. But he got a glimpse of my full monty setup & really likes the task oriented virtual desktops. So he was wondering if I knew how to create a similar setup in Kubuntu. My promise to him was to try to find out. So, does anybody know how I can set up Kubuntu with a similar virtual desktop setup?

Sure... install FullMonty on top of it. Problem solved.  ;D

Lots of work my friend.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

My friend drives a Datsun. I showed him where to get a free Ferrari, but now my friend wants to know how to make his Datsun look and go like a Ferrari.
 Any ideas?

Yea. Got an idea. Put all the careful planning, hard work at creating, time at testing and debugging and all other effort that pinoc put into creating full monty into your friend's system. When you've done all of that, you will have a close (perhaps) approximation of full monty.
Easier to install the real thing and say "thank you" to pinoc.

All good advice but possibly a little difficult to follow. I think the key word in the OP is "client". The customer is always right, so telling him/her to install something else isn't good business.

But this is the pclos forum, not a Kubuntu one, so it's difficult to give reliable advice here for a distro we don't use. There will be many similarities, but a few little differences also which could trip you up.

I think the first thing you need to do is explain that you didn't set it up that way yourself. You downloaded a system that was already made that way. Then I would suggest you help your client to find and read KDE configuration documents. Hopefully they'll realise they might do better to re-install, but it's also possible they have critical business data they can't afford to risk and would rather work on their KDE to configure it the way they want. It's their choice and you are being a good business contact by helping them find the information they want. Most of all it's good to see people turning to Linux in a business context, because that's the future for all of us. Let's not discourage them with petty rivalries.

if your friend has a datsun 280zx and wants to convert it into a ferrari, i am sure that he needs medical attention, now

about the port the fullmonty to other kde desktops

is it involved more than config files, any specific tool?  if not, theoretically you could copy and paste configs form one destop to the other but since i never used fullmonty i could be completely wrong, lost or look idiotic by just considering the idea :D

It's easy but time consuming ;)
Read and learn the full KDE manual.
Install all programs as installed in FM.
Learn how to create workspaces and different desktop configurations.
Learn scripting and programming.
Take a week or two many many months to configure the screens and system for the 6 desktops and you are done.

That's about it,
Pinoc correct me........... ;)

Edit: corrected

FullMonty is a nice example of how you can customise KDE to your likings: FullMonty is a customised KDE desktop environment, setup the way I wanted it to be and it is made for PCLinuxOS. Besides addlocale, I see the FM as one of my main contributions, to make Texstar's PCLinuxOS even more special and valuable.
FullMonty is a PCLinuxOS only KDE desktop and I have no intentions to help getting it up and running on any other distro.

FullMonty is not just a different desktop layout but an entire concept. It includes many other things to make it a fully usable system: all scripts of the FM-tools, customised user account setup, fine-tuned application and settings, custom PCLinuxOS-specific additions, graphics, and much more. I worked many many months on this, everything of FullMonty is made specifically to match with PCLinuxOS.

In short, if you like FM, great then use it on PCLinuxOS. But if you don't want to use PCLinuxOS then digg into KDE, learn how it works, and setup your desktop the way you want it. In my already limited free time I work for PCLinuxOS, not other distros.
