Alsamixer: cannot load mixer controls: Invalid argument (SOLVED)

Hi Guys,

Previously alsamixer is working, but after the updates, alsamixer won't work, it says cannot load mixer controls: Invalid argument

/etc/modprobe.conf
install scsi_hostadapter /sbin/modprobe sata_nv; /sbin/modprobe pata_amd; /bin/true
install ide-controller /sbin/modprobe ide_generic; /bin/true
install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe ehci_hcd; /sbin/modprobe ohci_hcd; /bin/true
alias eth0 forcedeth
alias sound-slot-0 snd_hda_intel

lspci |grep -i audio
00:05.0 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)


And when i click the Phonon, under systemsettings/Multimedia it won't open and it crashed.
I even re-installed the phonon-devel still it won't open.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Try opening a terminal and log in as root then type alsaconf, and see if that might help

Hi,

In the PCL Control Center (PCC) -hardware-sound configuration
screen you can check for the correct settings for that sound card.
Hardware configuration-Sound will give an additional screen.

Reset, reboot, rerun alsaconf in terminal as well as alsamixer.
Some added clue might pop up.

It looks like an intel driver is showing for the NVIDIA card ?

Yes, i think the phonon-devel is the culprit, because when i did an update for the phonon-devel the sound was gone and it becomes intel which previously NVIDA.

What else was removed?

Check logfile under /root/.synaptic/log

Removing or updating phonon-devel package won't help you.
A devel package is needed for building/compiling software from the source.

I guess the phonon-vlc-backend package causes the issue and removig it could be solving the issue!

It doesnt help, even if i uninstalled the phonon-vlc-backend still the alsamixer won't showed up and still no sound.

Is there a symlink called /etc/asound.state
on your computer ?

Problem solved, its the phonon-vlc backend  i have uninstalled this package and use the phonon-xine instead
