I'm a member of that Steam group, and it was just announced that the beta is now totally open.  I'm thinking of trying to use Alien to install it.

Open Beta Steam Linux is now available http://store.steampowered.com/about/
The open Beta calls for another distro distro 12.04 (and "experimental -310" drivers for nVidia graphics cards), the another distro install / setup Wiki is here:
https://wiki.another distro.com/Valve, where 'another distro" is u buntu

I've got PCLinuxOS 2012.9 KDE w/all PCLOS updates on a P4 desktop PC (has nVidia 7600GT vidcard) and on an HP/Compaq laptop Core2Duo CPU (has integrated non-nVidia graphics).

The Steam installer is a .deb file, according to the above Wiki the .deb can be installed manually using dpkg from command line (or apparently via Wine, tho vague about that). Does PCLOS have dpkg (I was too lazy to look), as if so, will it handle .deb files?

So I'm wondering if anyone can opine about potential success or failure to put this on either of my 2 PCLOS systems, hoping to run TF2 (free-to-play) and possibly some of the other Linux-ported Valve Steam games?  Thoughts?

I found an RPM for the Steam client, but when I tried to install it came back with unresolvable dependencies.  I don't think it's going to be currently runnable.

Of the three packages that were problems, two do not seem to be in the repos, and our version of glibc is lower than that required.

@CaptainSarcastic
Don't do alien the .deb file
There are script files changing Synaptic for an extra (.deb) repo.
It's distroying the PCLinuxOS repo settings.
We'll have to wait for a PCLinuxOS version, cause the .rpm version is also adding alienated and destroying scripts and settings in Synaptic, not ment for the PClinuxOS settings.

(Been there done that and repaired Synaptic and settings)

@ CaptainSarcastic and DeBaas:

Thanks for your prompt and informative replies!

I'm glad I asked before going down that rocky road (esp. since I'm a linux n00b).  I'll just wait in hopes that the PCLOS software devs can sort out these difficulties and sometime give us a compatible package to run Steam Linux on our beloved PCLOS boxes.

Alien didn't work at all for me, but I tried downloading the RPMs for Mandriva from here:  http://software.opensuse.org/download.html?project=games&package=steam

I used RPMinstaller to try to run them, and got the unresolvable dependencies.  Synaptic appears to be just fine, still.

I'm giving it a whirl in 64 bit - run into these:

steam: Depends: glibc (>= 2.15)
         Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 4.6)
         Depends: lib64x11_6 (>= 1.4.99.1)

try and run it anyways and see what happens :-)

/root/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam: error while loading shared libraries: libX11.so.6: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

anyone knows if there are 64 bit binaries for steam around?

*sit on hands* : waiting for 64 bit client.... (http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/882966056706397589/#p2)

anyone want to package this for 32 bit for now, send me a pm and I provide the src.rpm :-)

cheers,
MBantz

I tried with a *.deb file, no luck. There seems to be an *.rpm file here:

http://software.opensuse.org/package/steam

You have to go down to the bottom right and click to expand, there were no Mandrivia packages so I don't know, the opensuse is rpm. Anybody who gets this working send me an email!

Even though CS and CSS are not on the list of games yet, I'd still like to install so I can chat w/friends and not have to boot into that *other* OS....

I have some time to spend, so I fired up the 32 bit build environment,

the issue now is that the prebuilt binaries from Steam (aimed at Ubuntu) require glibc version 2.15 and we have 2.13 in our 32-bit repo,

will wait until we get 2.15,

cheers,

Just use the latest version of Playonlinux to install steam from their menu.
i had a problem playing Left for dead,wouldnt launch from steam itself.So i closed steam and closed playonlinux.
then opened the virtual drive where steam was installed,then used wine to open steam and everything worked perfect.
im running Wine 1.4.1
