Gimp plugin - refocus
« on: December 12, 2012, 11:36:27 AM »
I thought I had read about this plugin in the forum before, but a search isn't finding anything...maybe I'm losing it ???
 ;)

Anyway, here are the details:

Quote
During image processing operations such as scanning and scaling, images tend to get blurry. The blurred impression of these images is due to the fact that image pixels are averaged with their neighbors. Blurred images don't have sharp boundaries and look as though they have been taken with an unfocussed camera.
Refocus is a plug-in for the Gimp (the GNU Image Manipulation Program). This plug-in attempts to "refocus" the image, using a technique called FIR Wiener filtering. The traditional technique for sharpening images is to use unsharp masking. Refocus generally produces better results than unsharp masking.

The plug-in comes with a preview that helps you select the best parameters.

If someone has more information about this...

...if not, maybe I should make a request?

Cheers!

Ohhh, another post!

I just came across another, similar, project:
http://refocus-it.sourceforge.net/

The Refocus-it GIMP plug-in, released under GNU General Public License (GPL), can be used to refocus images acquired by a defocused camera, blurred by gaussian or motion blur or any combination of these.

There are a few nice features of this plug-in, especially adaptive / static area smoothing used to remove the so called "ringing" effect introduced by edges in the image and effects introduced by noise. Mirror and periodical boundary conditions are available. Preview helps you select the best parameters.

There are a few NOT nice features of this plug-in as well, namely its memory and CPU requirements.

The algorithm is based on finding the minimum of the error function using Hopfield neural network.

Yes, it all seems very "CSI"-ish.

Both refocus & refocus-it are quite old Gimp plugins - no where near CSI

Never could get a refocus that worked (at least not in PCLOS) but I have a refocus-it and it does work in PCLOS 32 bit / Gimp 2.8.2

If you want to give it a try, it is here
http://rapidshare.com/files/435661692/gimp_plugin-refocus-it

Put it in your local -/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins directory & make it executable.  Find it in filters -> enhance -> iterative refocus

Don't expect very much, it comes from a time when images were very much smaller & takes forever with images from modern cameras often with lousy results.

A better bet if you have WINE installed is a win appliction

Thanks, I'll play with that...

The CSI remark was firmly tongue in cheek...

smartdeblur-1.27 is in the repo. The demo looked great, but I wasn't able to figure out how to get good results from my blurry pictures. ;D

Is that in testing? I can not find it in my repo mirror. Nice to have it but not a problem.

I don't think any of these will produce 'good' results just maybe a little better.

For the uninitiated, a screenshot of a blurred test image. http://i.imgur.com/hfpIP.jpg
Left is original
Center is Iterative Refocus, this is very picky on settings.  A small regular sharpen first then refocus-it with a small radius & number of iterations. The default settings are liable to put a user off.
Right is Smart Deblur (using WINE)

As you can see neither is very good, all these techniques tend to introduce noise. That test image is small, with a large image you have to be very patient.
