I'm thinking that happened even before K-Mart bought Sears (2004?). Have always thought their newer style ratchets were kinda cheesy

Never been a big Sears fan.  Never liked a store that sold you soup-to-nuts in one store.  Whoops... guess that includes Wallmart & Target.  Guess that is why I don't go there either.

I like to buy reputable brand tools for my carpentry work.  Seeing I use them every day (they help me make my living).  Bosch is my first choice.  For some others less informed, it may be another.

But when it comes to tools to fix my vehicles, a mid-quality brand can be ok.

I'm in construction, myself, and my choice depends on the tool. Bosch makes good tools, but Porter Cable (before Black and Decker bought them), DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Hilti are fine tools in their own right, as well, and certain tools you want one of them brands. For instance, if I need a Porta-band, I want the old Porter Cable, which is now the DeWalt, model. It's got a small but powerful motor, so it's lightweight and particularly useful if you have to hold it up in the air to use or drag up a ladder. The other brands are just too bulky and heavy for that job.

Honestly, mid-quality doesn't really seem to exist these days. My father still has some older Craftsman hand tools that are great. Today's are just cheap tools with a good warranty.

ruel24,

I agree there more good brands out there than just Bosch.

The "old" Black & Decker tools wouldn't die.  Dewalt (black & decker with a new face) is ok.

Way back in my framing days, my circular saws were the white-metal Rockwell saws  They could take a lickin'

Each brand has something that they really made good.  About 60% of my tools are Bosch.  But I also have Porta-Cable, Makita, Spotnail.
