[SOLVED] Phantom sound card problems

I fitted a Xonar DS to my machine and it worked fine.
I then removed it as I did not need it any more but some programs still attempt to use it like Dragon Player and come up with the following notification.
"The audio playback device Xonar DS, Multichannel Default audio Device) does not work. Fallingback to HDA ATI SB (VT1708S Analog)
and I get no audio.
Audio works fine on Clementine, Flash etc.
Any help appreciated. Asus M4A78LT-M LE AMD 760G Socket AM3 Integrated ATI Radeon 3000 2 Gb RAM, KDE up to date

Is this not the correct audio device? - HDA ATI SB (VT1708S Analog)

What device are the other aps such as Clementine using?

Do you have PulseAudio installed?

If yes then you can select to which audio device each app is sending its sound stream by using PulseAudio Volume Control  (pavucontrol in Synaptic)

You might also be able to edit the settings in KDE CC - Multimedia - Phonon to make the correct audio device the default for all audio.

Hi again Just17, yes HDA ATI SB (VT1708S Analog) is correct but does not make any sound with Dragon
In Phonon the Xonar is greyed out and there is no option to remove it (Already tried that before posting) but it does say "default audio device"  I have choosen it to "Prefer"
Also looked in Hardware in PCLinuxOS CC and Xonar is not showing up there although there is an Unknown driver showing as an alternative.
Pulse audio is installed but not enabled.
I have now enabled it and rebooted and am getting sound but notification is still coming up the same. Dragon player is crashing sometimes.

Hi! 

It might be a setting in Dragon Player? .......  sorry I don't use that app so not sure if such settings exist in it for the choice of audio device.

If Dragon is the only app throwing the fault then I suspect it is a Dragon setting for the default audio device .....



EDIT

I just installed Dragon player and attempted to play an .mp4  video .....  it plays without sound here.

Checked in PulseAudio and apparently there is no sound stream ....... the file is good ....  so something weird with Dragon it seems ....  it plays an .avi  file of the same video WITH sound!

Go figure!

               Checked a bunch of video and one audio file ......  played all videos WITH sound except .mp4
Played .mp3 audio file too.

So .....  was the file you tried an  .mp4?

You can try to rename ~/.kde4/share/config/phonondevicesrc to ~/.kde4/share/config/phonondevicesrc.bak and reboot. If this does not help, rename it back.

MP4s   Dragon player = X  Xine = Unsupported codec   SMplayer = Sound okay but no video
AVI Dragon Player = OK Xine = OK SMPlayer = OK
DVD Dragon Player = OK Xine = OK SMPlayer = OK
MOV Dragon Player = X Xine = Null audio codec  SMPlayer = OK

So a mix of Codec problems and a few weird things. My brain cell hurts!

Xine = Unsupported codec                 Warning, but clicking OK will play the video, no sound
SMplayer = Sound okay but no video   Sound and Video here

AVI
Dragon Player = OK                         Confirmed
Xine = OK                                       Confirmed
SMPlayer = OK                                Confirmed

DVD

Not tested here        

Xine appeared to have a problem with AAC audio in the .mp4 files here.
Installed     xine-faad
Fixed that problem for Xine and DragonPlayer

Hi Just17, thanks for  xine-faad, that has also fixed for me the sound issues playing MP4s and .movs using Xine. and Dragon player
