i like the kit i have and have had for several years.  i don't change my refrigerator because a smart new model comes on the market.  if what i have suits and does the job i want it to do, i stay with it.  i don't see the point of change for change's sake.

I was very happy with my old non-smart Nokia. I felt no need for a phone that does email, surf the net, etc. Very happy.
Then my phone was stolen in a crowded bus. And I found that I could get a decent smart-phone cheaper than a non-smart (dumb?) one. I tried one out & took the plunge. I got a Samsung GT-S5670 for US$190. And whaddya know. I liked it....very much. All the features I thought I didn''t need.....well I still didn't need but I enjoyed. Lots. I especially liked the large screen.

I gotta note that I don't have to subscribe to a data plan. We use prepaid vouchers. About $15/mo, so cost isn't a real factor for me. But the online features are really convenient, & fun.

I'm an MLU & set in my ways, but I'm glad I took the smart phone path.

Behind the curve ? I'm not sure I can see the curve ;D. Single core Sempron CPU and a 7 year old 40gig HDD, got 4 gigs of mem though. I did "upgrade" to a LCD monitor, got it at a Goodwill store for 10 bucks. (HP vs17). Got a cell phone last year, a Tracfone, worked fine for me but bought another one, still a Tracfone,  a couple weeks ago to get a better camera, old one was 0.3 Megapixel, new one is a 1.3 Megapixel :D. Cost 15 dollars and 20 dollars every 3 months mainly just to keep it in service + came with double minutes for life of phone. (was able to keep minutes from old phone also). Both phones were small LG "flipper" types

Joe, I still have several 35mm SLR's as well, all Pentax ;)(one still has film in it from at least a couple years ago )
Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

I have several brands Canon, Nikon and Konica. They are excellent cameras and take great pictures. I shoot mostly Black and White. TriX 400
The only drawback to me is that you don't know if you got the shot until you develop it. Sometimes you need to take multiple shots of the same thing and that uses up film quickly.
If you didn't get the shot, you are out of luck.

Yep. It can be very annoying to find out that the three shots you took of the same thing on a vacation didn't have a single one come out like you wanted. (Hello Smokey Mts.) I really would like to get me a "new fangled" digital camera. A Nikon Coolpix L810 would be awesome.
Love the look of B&W, It just seems to capture and convey the mood/feeling better more often than not. Have used color and B&W film from ISO25 through 1600, but that was some time ago. For people and wildlife I favored Kodak, for outside summer action and landscapes, Fuji.

Good choices.

While I appreciate having a smartphone, the only reason I ended up with one is that it cost me absolutely nothing to upgrade - I was one of the last people to fall under the Verizon Wireless plan of "new every two."  It was cheaper for me to get the smartphone than anything else, and I really did need a new phone.

In general, I avoid the first generation of almost anything.  I've seen too many bugs, and too many cases of the public basically being beta testers for new products.  I've also seen too many cases of competing formats (back to Betamax versus VHS) to be an early adopter for most things.

I think it is regrettable that people have grown to view technology, including computers, as disposable commodities.  My secondary desktop is a dual-core Athlon 64 socket 939 with 4 gigs of DDR1, and it still holds it own quite nicely.  Under Linux it is more than snappy, and exceeds what most users would really need.
