Full Monty menu file location
« on: December 07, 2012, 12:56:22 PM »
A newbie question here!

Where are the menu files located in a Full Monty installation?  I'd like to back them up after making the changes I want.

Menu entries are created by .desktop files. These are located in /usr/share/applications.

besides what Neal mentioned you should always backup your hidden directory ".kde4" (in your Home directory, e.g., /home/<your user-name>/.kde4) which contains all KDE-specific settings.

Furthermore, if Full Monty isn't very different from other KDE installs, the menu entries that you create yourself by editing the menu (right-click on Launcher button > "Edit applications...") are stored as .desktop files in /home/<yourname>/.local/share/applications.

Neal, Pinoc, & Bald Brick,

Thank you for your quick replies and in pointing me in the right direction.  I see where all the changes are being made in the "user-name" menu system and where the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications come into play.

So after making all changes that I want, I should backup the .kde4 and .local directories that contain all the file changes?

I know that this is probably very simple, but where are the default menu files located?  I am using the KDE menu application launcher, not the Lancelot menu.

I've installed FullMonty and am liking all that I see.  The ease of installing and keeping up to date, the ability of using the system as soon as it's installed, and the ability to customize to suit my needs.  Looks as though you have gained another satisfied user.

See my previous reply.
With kde, you get the additional files as pointed out by Pinoc and Bald Brick.
