remove 'smplayer' entry from synaptic
« on: December 09, 2012, 01:02:03 AM »
Hello friends,

I am a new user of pclos 2012. Today I tried to install smplayer via synaptic but it did not download and install. Then I searched smplayer in synaptic but it appears as an entry below the "All" in synaptic on the left had side. Below is the image for the problem.

I no longer can download smplayer and use it. Instead now I want to remove that "smplayer" entry from synaptic. How do I do that? Please help!!!

Thanks in advance.

What repo do you use?

What version of PCLinuxOS do you use?

Did you reloaded packages in Synaptic?

Are You fully upgraded?

Regards.

Andrzej

kapalik, on the left side you see either "All" for all available packages, and (in your screenshot) "smplayer" is the search criteria you entered. If you select it, you see the results on the right side.

Hi kapalik,

Welcome to the funhouse.

See what Andrzej says. smplayer is in synaptic and should be easy to install. Maybe connection issue or maybe you need to change the repo, or maybe even a delay of the repo updating. If you have a new and fully updated system it should work.

They say a picture speaks 1000 words. Thank you very much for posting that screenshot :)

The correct answer for your question is:
Close and restart Synaptic.

Explannation:
The 'smplayer' entry you are seeing on the left hand column is (as correctly pointed out by poster above) your search term. It is not an entry for software in Synaptic.
By default, Synaptic will remember your searches conducted during that session so that in case you want to do it again, it is just a question of one-click.

If you still want to install SMPlayer, please give us some more details regarding your problem.
After searching for SMPlayer, what EXACTLY did you do?
What happened then?
What was the error message you got if any?

Hello friends,

Thanks for your kind suggestions. I reloaded the synaptic and smplayer was there for install. I got paranoid since this is my first use of PCLINUXOS.

Now there is one another problem. After loading smplayer I cannot find the file types association menu. Where I can find it???

Probably the easiest method is to right click on a file of the type you wish to change, select Properties, and on the General tab select the small spanner icon .....  you can then edit the apps that will be set to open that file type, the topmost being the default and the others available from a right click (on the file) menu.

There are other ways to get to these settings, but this is probably the simplest.

Hi paranoid,

Yep it takes time to lean all the tricks, keep asking.

Do you have libdvdcss and win32-codecs-all installed?

No, sorry but not the correct answer. An answer, yes. It will work but takes more time and effort than is necessary.
Instead click the Status button - lower left corner.

Surely all that was required was to click on SMPlayer in the left panel to display it in the right panel, from where it could be selected for install?

But Neal, that will only hide that entry by switching the display. If you come back to SEARCH button, it is still there!! ;)

You are right, if you take into account the so called "spirit of the question".
However, if you just stick to the "lettering of the question", the answer I gave will be correct ;)
