I'm one of these bad people...
« on: December 08, 2012, 11:39:57 PM »
When I go Christmas shopping, I always find something to buy for myself.

Was looking for a mechanic tool set for my older son, when I found this https://www.acklandsgrainger.com/AGIPortalWeb/WebSource/ProductDisplay/globalProductDetailDisplay.do?item_code=WSWSKC189

Though I bought it at Sutherland Autoparts in Saskatoon for 139.95.

I still got my son a tool set & wrenches at Home Depot for 110.00 combined.  I'm still a nice dad, no?

My other son wants to upgrade his computer.  So I got him a 120.00 gift certificate at OTV Technologies.

Nice, but seems a bit expensive, unless it is intended for daily or commercial use.  I usually spring for the $49.95 Sears or K-Mart sets...

Just for working on my own vehicles.  But I'm a tool nut.

I also like mechanic's tools with a lifetime warranty.

My younger son has MasterCraft tools, older will at Christmas will have Husky tools.  All three brands have lifetime replacement, no questions asked.

Before I got married, I used to buy a Christmas gift for myself every year. Since I've gotten older, there was no one to buy me anything if I didn't happen to be dating someone at Christmas time, so I awarded myself! This was when I'd buy something like a big fat new something that I've been wanting to buy, but was expensive and I couldn't bring myself to do it. lol

I'm single and I can do it.

BTW, Sammy2fish, have you ever tried Matco, Cornwell, Mac, or Snap-on tools? They're in a whole other league. They fit tighter and have little to no slop on them. Yes, they're expensive, but they don't break like Craftsman/Husky/Kobalt, who I suspect are actually made by the same company. I can strip out a 1/4" drive Craftsman ratchet like nothing, but a Snap-on will take a beating.

Yes, I looked at Mac tools.  But I didn't want to have to take out a major loan to buy at the tools I'd want.  I'm guessing Snap-On would be much the same.

I think these Westward ones would be a bit better than Husky or Mastercraft.

Though I'm not a mechanic that uses his tools everyday.  I use mine like every second weekend or so.

I have a small number of Snap-on tools, mostly wrenches and screw drivers. I tried to break the handle on one of my screw drivers once, used a vice to hold it and hit it hard with a 5lb hammer, didn't phase it ;), but you can buy a set from Craftsman for the price of one from Snap-on. If you change spark plugs a lot I can't recommend their swivel spark plugs sockets enough, have tried a number of others and the Snap-on's just work better.
(some sort of voodoo f****** magic I think ;D).
Just some advise on sockets, never use a 12 point socket unless it's a 12 bolt head. easiest way to skin your knuckles, break a socket and/or strip a bolt head is with a 12 point socket on a standard 6 point bolt head!

Sears Craftsman tools just had to change the "Made In America" on their tools. It has been discovered that it is not true. I think they still have a lifetime guarantee.

I'm thinking that happened even before K-Mart bought Sears (2004?). Have always thought their newer style ratchets were kinda cheesy
