As a matter of interest I just now booted up my Minime livecd and the usb showed up in the Device Notifier which would seem to indicate not a hw problem?

Can you mount it?
Can you copy a relatively large file to or from it?
Is it possible to do the above with the same computer you reported the problem.

Yes it was on the same computer in fact. I'll boot the livecd again right now and do what you suggest - mount and move a file.

Yes - it appeared in Device Notifier and I was able to mount and unmount. I was also able to copy and move a number of fairly large (2-3mbs) files.

Another thing which might be relevant. Each time that I boot up a message flashes briefly across the top of the screen. This has  only happened in the past few days. What I could read of it was

KDE Power Management System could not be initialised.....

I couldn't get the rest.

The power management thing may not be related.

There is one more thing to do - check if the same installation can read a different USB Flash Drive.

If that worked, then go into PCC ... Local disks and see if DiskDrake can see your flash drive. Most likely it will not.
Then, copy all the data off the USB drive using LiveCD to a secure location.
Reboot into Windows XP. Try to access using Windows Explorer. If it asks to format, then go ahead with the default options and do it. That should do it.
Or you may have to go into Control Panel ... Computer Management ... Local Disks or something like that, delete all partitions, create a new FAT32 partition and check with Explorer again.
If successful, you should be able to read it back in PCLinuxOS.

Thanks sling-shot but I don't have another usb to hand and, as I have another possibly related problem, I think I may have to do a reinstall of Minime.

This, which I was going to open in another thread, but may as well mention here concerns the file managers.

In the Places panel on the left I used to see Home, Network, Root, Trash, Minime, Windows, Backups, Empty.
Now all I see are the root folders. This makes Konqueror and Dolphin useless and means I can't even save my FF and TB config files.

I don't mind reinstalling from time to time - it gives me a nice new OS without these annoying and time consuming problems. ;D

Considering that the USB drive works well in the Live environment, just bite the bullet and go for that re-install.

Any particular reason to go with the MiniMe?

Well I'm not great on videos or music or graphics or games except for Freecell and Mahjongg so much of what is on Pclinuxos would be unused. And Synaptic makes it easy to get whatever else I need. And I like lean and fast. ;D

Many thanks for all the help I've had on this thread - yourself, Just17 and particularly muungwana. And, mustn't forget the man himself, Texstar. This forum is one of the best.

Is the hal daemon running? Check in PCC and make sure it's set to start on boot.

Thanks kj but I've already taken the easy way out and reinstalled. Now the problems are gone. ;D
