WiFi dongle not working with June2012 LXDE
« on: December 02, 2012, 03:39:44 AM »
Hi, I installed the Jone 2012 LXDE as my XFCE was borked (known booting problem). However, LXDE can't see my Broadcomm 300N USB dongle.  As I neeed WiFi access on a daily basis, I've put E17 Fall Magic on instrad. That does see and configure correctly the WiFi dongle.  What could acount for this difference?

possible reasons:
1. The install that works with it uses an updated kernel that supports the card, the install that did not work with it uses an older kernel that does not work with it.
2. There is a difference in the hardware detection routines that miss the card.
3. The card need an additional package that is installed by default in the install that works and not installed in the install that doesnt.

I am not familiar with "E17 Fall Magic on instrad",is it one of pclinuxos spinoffs?

Hi, sorry 'instrad' is a typo, should read 'instead'.

E17 (Enlightenment is a community respin of PCLOS, currently lacking a maintainer (from the Openbox/E17 sub-forum). I'll stick with that for now as it does what I want.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think differeing kernels is the most likely reason.

since it belong to pclinuxos family, you can start synaptic and install lxde. Its entry will be added to the log in screen, you can then select it and you will always log in using it.
