"What I do know for sure is the file keeps coming back. But, once again, thanks for the help you offered and thanks to everyone. I don't have a lot of stuff downloaded so maybe the best thing to do would be a fresh install (and no more downloads from PB)."

that might be a possible solution but doesn't offer a real solution

if this happens again, would you just reinstall again?

first try to wipe the file and then if all the suggestions doesn't work the last option should be reinstall but i still think that you have a windows virus running thanks to wine residing in ram and that is why i mentioned the disable wine service and uninstall wine

I just now checked synaptic and no part of wine is installed. It showed wine when I went to mc and I deleted it from there but that was probably an hour ago or more.

As for the fresh install it is not a big issue, or won't be when I get a new dvd drive. If I had a working dvd drive I would have done that already since I don't have much stuff downloaded and can easily make notes of which programs I want to keep and use and which I will not use again.

Ya might try rebooting without internet then in a terminal as user type "top" without quotes and see what processes are running.

This is getting on the verge of simply "Hilarious";

TOP TEN LIST:

1- YOU downloaded a file.

2- It "happened" to be a LINUX executable, without you ever giving it permissions, nor executing it.

3- That magic "executable file", is creating a file which you have deleted so many times that it filled your "trash" folder.

4- Your main concern is "that" reoccurring file.

5- You claim that it is a virus (even though none exists),,

6- All attempts to assist have failed.

7- Nobody else is having this problem.

8- Most of our instructions have been met with a simple "It did Not Work"

9- A bunch of us have spent some time on this "problem".

Last but not least,,,

10- This thread is in "the sandbox".

It is a funny thing indeed!  ;D

Well, that is wonderful news. I am glad that it made you happy. For whatever it's worth, and maybe it's not much since you seem to believe that the problem never existed in the first place, it seems to have resolved itself (perhaps from the time shortly after I deleted wine in mc--I guess). I will try my best not to bother anyone else with any problem. Have a good day.

By the way, read the title of the thread again. I said I THINK I MAY have downloaded a virus. That is what I thought it was since I have never seen an avi file that couldn't be deleted in just one try.

Are you asking me why your post was deleted? I have no idea since I didn't delete anyone else's post(s). I doubt I could if I wanted to and I never saw any by you that I would have even if I could.

xenaflux, i deleted your post as it was a direct wind-up aimed at rudge.  would you please stop squabbling and get on amicably.

jim, it helps if you give as much info as possible when asking for help.  'it didn't work' does not describe the steps you took.

you could install from a usb key if you had one.

Do you know the difference between moderator and dictator ?

As from now on, I will go on amicably, as I will not post anymore.

I imagine you are correct but sometimes "it didn't work" is about all I can say. Many times someone has told me some command to use in the terminal and for whatever reason "it didn't work." I get "command not found" (not all the time but many times, more times than one would think possible assuming the commands were correct). Anyway, thanks jaydot. I think you have known me long enough, going back to the first time when I used to post here a long time ago, that I didn't intentionally just waste anyone's time.
