as far as I remember (not looked) MBR partition table can handle 3TB so you would need a GPT partition table, I know Fdisk can't read that but I do know that Gparted (and maybe diskdrake) can, so I would advise for you to use Gparted first before installing. If anyone on here knows different I'm all ears too ;D

for $340 I would buy 3x  2T drives.( $100 each )

Less risk if it/they go bellies-up.

use 2 in the computer and one as backup drive

OK, thatÅ› me, because I am a little nervous when hearing <WD >.

And I'm just the opposite - I won't consider anything other than WD...  I've had too many Seagates, Samsungs, Hitachis and Toshibas die on me.

Yeah, I read on the web about the likes and dislikes of hardware pieces.

It reminded me of the saying ( proverb ? ) :
The one man's bread is the other man's dead.

I had 2 WD dead in less than 2 months, both brand-new ( +- 1 month ).
I also still have my 4 seagates from 10 years ago......happy as ..ta ta ta !

I ended up buying a 4 TB WD where there are actually two bonded 2 TB drives. Seems to work most of the time but on occasion when trying to click on a folder Dolphin locks and needs to be terminated.

So certainly it doesn't work perfectly.

First, congratz with your purchase. I hope you enjoy it.
As far as Dolpin-lock is concerned, did you verify you have the same problem in Konqueror ?

This drive is not exactly what 99 % of the people have right now.
So, I would patiently wait. I am sure that in the near future, there will be a solution or some tips as how to avoid this. Maybe it's software and not your drive.

btw: as far as size is concerned...Are you a gamer ? because 4 Tb.......whow !
