DeadBeef and UMPlayer suddenly started playing ok.
These show up on the Playback tab as you said.
DeadBeef still freezes with one .wav file that I have found so far, but I
can open  terminal and kill it. It doesn't freeze the system.
I will have to investigate further about WINE.
I am at present happy to modify this series of messages to
Partially Solved.

I would like to thank everyone for the advice and extreme patience shown.
I admit that I have found the whole thing very interesting.

Might be a problem with the file.
If Deadbeef does not freeze with other files then all is OK, IMO.
Maybe something about the formatting of the file that Deadbeef does not like.

In truth I consider your OS sound problem completely solved ......  Wine is an application and if it has a problem then a separate thread for it should be started .........  IMO of course  :D

Maybe someone will post about what system sounds *should* be heard or if you have to enable them.

I don't normally use LXDE but do have it installed for specific purposes, and do not have start up sound, for instance, if that is what you mean.

So ....  what 'system sounds' should be heard? ......  anyone ....

Ah, perhaps I am labouring  under a misapprehension and there are in fact
no system sounds in LXDE, like startup, error, exclamation etc.

On my PCLinuxOS installations (LXDE version, too) all login-sounds are working good. I have not see problems, in login-souds.
