recheck alsamixer after the configuration maybe it sets the values to zero again

btw what program are you using to check whether sound is working or not?
The full life is a big mess

Will recheck alsamix when I am back on my own pc.
Checking for sound on bootup, youtube, game (Painkiller in WINE), DeadBeef.

Running Live CD at the moment from another pc. Sound ok, gmixer ok,
volumeicon in taskbar.

Just a thought.
Might this have something to do with updates ?

when i disable pulseaudio, i can let play only one application, if i have then deadbeef in task panel, i can't hear audio from youtube, but when i exit deadbeef i can hear sound from youtube. But this is for me a no go. So i have enabled pulseaudio...

That might indicate that OSS is being used ?
It only allows one sound stream at the time, IIRC.

If it were my machine I would try removing everything OSS related .....  or maybe even try a different kernel ......

.....  and use   Pulse Audio Volume Control (pavucontrol in repository) to configure the sound cards.

Another suggestion would be to install Qas Mixer and check all settings it makes visible to the user.

Back on my own pc.
alsamixer still set all to 100%.
No sound.

Installed Qas Mixer. Hover over icon in taskbar shows volume 0%
no matter where I move the sliders.

Tried reinstalling Pulse Audio.
Volume control on taskbar. Set it to max.
Still no sound.
Rebooted - volume control disappeared again.

Ran pavucontrol, received a message
Connection failed: Connection refused.

How do I remove all oss stuff ? Not in Synaptic.

Looks like kernel-3.2.18-pclos2.bfs installed.
Bit confused by choice. Any recommendations which kernel to try ?

Also booted from live cd. No sound.
Beginning to look as if LXDE doesn't like my hardware ????

Nvidia GeForce GT 630

Did you delve into the settings of Qas?

PulseAudio is not working correctly.
Try this to correct it

Latest status.
PulseAudio and PulseAudio volume control uninstalled and reinstalled.
PulseAudio volume control, GMixer, qas mixer, alsamixer all work.
Have got volume control icon in taskbar but haven't rebooted yet (see ** below)

pulseaudio
volume control in taskbar - master 100%

qas mixer
volume is at 100%

GMixer Playback
Devices - CA0106 (ALSA mixer)
slider is at 100% for Master and IEC958 Front
and CA0106 (OSS mixer)
slider 100% volume

PulseAudio Volume Control
Playback tab
show: applications
when playing youtube shows
ALSA plug-in [operapluginwrapper-native]: ALSA playback on
Output devices tab
Built-in Audio Digital Stereo (IEC958)
Front Left and Front Right set to 100%
Slider on volume shows about 50-60% across

when not playing youtube
Playback tab
Only system sounds
Output Devices tab
Built-in Audio Digital Stereo (IEC958)
Port: Digital Output (S/PDIF) - alsamixer shows S/PDIF
with small box with 00 in it, and no bar above it, cannot change it.

In PulseAudio volume control
playing a youtube video, if I set configuration to
GF108 High Definition Audio Controller Profile Off
and
Built-in Audio Profile Analog Stereo Duplex
then I get the sound.

Playing a video on Youtube now works under those conditions,
but nothing else.

DeadBeef - get high pitched beep for about a second then freezes system. Have to ctrl-alt-f1
to open cli session, and kill it.

** Update
Just rebooted, no volume control in taskbar,
still sound in youtube video. Still no sound in anything else.
GMixer now does not work, get
** Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GstObject)
W:Failed to load icon Icon 'stock_line_in' not present in theme

PulseAudio volume control Output Devices now shows Built-in Audio Analog Stereo

No way of changing this.

Post a picture of the configuration tab of pulseaudio vol control

That would appear to be the correct setting .....  leave it so.

Just rebooted afterf session in XP.
Volume control on taskbar, youtube still has sound.

How do I attach an image to my post ?
Or do I have to do it through something like Dropbox ?

Yep, this is correct ......  the unused digital card is off and the analogue one is on.

Are there some apps that are apparently 'playing' but you are not hearing anything?

The only apps AFAIK that are playing with sound (only when I actually start them though)
are DeadBeef (doesn't freeze pc now) looping a .wav file
and the game (Painkiller) played through WINE.
No sound when either of them are playing.
Is this what you meant ?

Copied 3 more games from my XP partition.
One game had sound, the other 2 did not.
Maybe how the game handles sound affects whether there is any ?

Yes ...  I am assuming those two are 'playing' but you cannot hear the sound?  am unsure from reading the above.

Can you try other audio and video applications to ensure you can hear the audio when they are playing?

I know nothing about Wine playing sounds ....  so someone else will have to comment on that.

All apps when they are playing should show up on the Playback tab of PA Vol Control.
