Well,, I Cut Myself.
« on: December 02, 2012, 10:11:21 PM »
 :-[

Nothing can be done about it. I keep my kitchen knives sharper than most razor blades and my pocket knives in the same condition.

I sharpen to 6000 grit water stone and then strop on leather.

I cut myself once about 4 years ago and again about two years ago.

Last week I did it again. Man that is a sick feeling.

Funny thing is,, it doesn't hurt when your knife is that sharp. It just kind of "snags" and vibrates for a second. You know you have cut yourself.

After a week, I think it looks good. No red, no swelling.  ::) ::)

"Finger Food" ?.... Anyone?  ;D ;D

A dull knife would be worse -- you'd be more likely to cut yourself then.

Most people don't realize the truth of your comment.

If I had been using a dull knife, I would have had to apply much more force behind my cut to get the job done.

If I had been applying that much force, it would have increased the likelihood of a slip and it would have ripped right through my finger when it did.  :o

Rudge, I too spend more time than average folks do on my knives.
I have a large collection of mostly folders and some fixed blades.
I have also made a few of my own.  They are just not finished unless they are very sharp!
I do not do much with our kitchen knives though, I guess I'm slacking there.lol

I have a modest collection myself but I own far fewer than I would like.

Spyderco Delica 4 and a Dragonfly are amongst my possessions.  ;D ;D ;D

Too true. Dull knives are dangerous. Or rather, trying to cut anything with a dull knife is dangerous.

Well, the company that I would have the most of would be Case, and I am a sucker for Perl and Abalone.
I also love fine tooling and custom knives.  As far as a true collector goes, I'm told that one should focus on one concept.
I do not!  I stopped counting after 500 knives.  These includes anything from miniatures to fantasy knives.  I get them as gifts from friends & family, with many having little or no real value to others, but I treasure them all.  Do you know who Peter Martin is?
He is a local maker and has been published many times.  I have a few of his works as well as some of his raw materials.
I also collect a lot of old knives, a lot through ebay & knife shows.  Sorry for the long reply, I think you hit a nerve.lol

Rudge,
The knife I carry and recommend, (Local laws permitting) is a Kershaw (Ken Onion) #1560.
I set the edge to 15 degrees and have used it for many years.  It is a one hand, opener with an assist.
Not beautiful, but a very strong & fast worker. ;D

Rudge cut himself ! What is this world coming too.  ::)

It is good that it was not bad. If you deal with knives it is bound to happen from time to time.

I will take a picture of the scar on the inside of my index finger someday and show you when I learned about knives. I think I was 9 or 10. Cut the tendon right in two. Not a fond memory.
But taught me respect for knives.

I had lots of nice knives over the years. Wish I still had a collection like some of you still do. If you are a knife person you just know how we feel. If not , you can't imagine what possible use we would have for so many knives.   ;)

That is nothing.... I've done enough stupid stuff to have the scars to prove it. Once, was helping my dad and got too close to a moulding head... took the end off a finger off, lucky I didn't hit bone. This weekend took all the skin off the first knuckle of my thumb drilling through a top plate to run wire... bled a lot but didn't hurt much. Today it hurts more. All this do-it-yourself stuff really wears on you. Glad you're okay though.

Your story made me look at my hand.  A few years ago, I bought myself a bicycle for getting to and from work.  I rode it home to get the feel for it and got home faster than public transportation.  After getting home, I went to put on the few accessories I needed.  The last item I was prepping was the new lock I bought for it.  They had those stupid plastic ties around the cables and I (like an idiot) grabbed a knife to cut them.  On the last one, the knife slipped and made an incision deep enough in my hand that you could see the tendons.  Ended up with several stitches and a chewing out by my father (via long distance call) for using the wrong tool for the job.
