(SOLVED) Start Menu Sub Folders Gone?
« on: December 02, 2012, 09:48:54 AM »
I dunno if I messed up somehow or not.  I've been playing around with LXDE and XFCE Desktops.  I then jumped back into KDE, which is my main desktop environment.

I clicked on he start menu and discovered that a lot of the sub-folders are missing.  For instance, when I go to the Games category, games ar enow scattered.    Gone are the sub-folders for card games, board games, etc.  The menu pops up and takes up he entire screen.

Same thing for other Menu entries.  Under Multimedia, gone are the video and audio sub folders.

I'm not sure if this is due to a recent update or jumping in and out of DEs.  I did not edit the Start Menu in any way.

Try this first:

Code: [Select]
kbuildsycoca4 enter (in  a terminal)

http://linux.die.net/man/8/kbuildsycoca4

It's not recommended to test a another desktop with the same user (KDE4 desktop as default).

I use always a different user to test a desktop (start a another session in a KDE4 session).

KSycoca

KSycoca caches menu structure and information about all available applications. You can rebuild the database with kbuildsycoca . The database which is built lives in /var/tmp/kdecache-${ USER }/ksycoca. It is automatically updated by KDED, checked during KDE login, and KDED watches for changes while logged in.

To disable watching for changes (since it may hurt over NFS) add the following to kdedrc:

[General]
CheckSycoca=false

To force regeneration, run touch $ KDEDIR /share/services/update_ksycoca .

I'm not sure why the 'test' above ....

I use more than one DE on a single user account ....  several in fact .....  and the only one that has interfered with another DE during "testing" has been Razor which I uninstalled.

MLUs rule the roost!

Thank you!:)  That worked!:)

Here's what I got:

Quote
$ kbuildsycoca4
kbuildsycoca4 running...
kbuildsycoca4(10491) parseLayoutNode: The menu spec file contains a Layout or DefaultLayout tag without the mandatory Merge tag inside. Please fix your file.

Not sure why I got that message. As I mentioned, I didn't edit the menu.

However, really slick how tins fell back into place.:)  Love this distro and community!:)

Looks like a save option for me if you want use a different desktop to create a new user for that desktop.
