These Videos Are Terrific!
« on: January 18, 2013, 06:45:52 AM »
A young guy came up wiht a realy net idea.  He has his mother try out various operating systems and records her trials and tribulations as she attempts o complete various tasks.

Here she is trying out LinuxMint:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-PTQVeCF9k

I requested that he have her give PCLinuxOS a try.:)

And of course, she tried and was quite frustrated with Windows 8! (No surprise here).

I didn't read any of the comments ......  but would have to say that presenting a non-advanced Linux user with such a set up is ridiculous.
There is no way I would have been able to get it to tell me the time for instance ......  I would not know the command required.
Nor would I want to!
I want a GUI, not something like this.
At the minimum one of the Arch based distros could have been used as a test .........  or else I am completely missing the point as the only pont made by this video appears to be that Linux is too difficult for most people.

Well... I respectfully disagree to a certain point. I think that this was a sort of joke. The Young fella was more then capable of installing the X server and some DE - he was just pointing out the honest truth - installation and configuration of Arch demands reading their wiki. Without it I would be just as lost as Diana was. ArchLinux is not instantly usable distro - You either love it or hate it. I am more then just happy with it.

My missus is using ArchLinux and she is pleased with it altho I did configured KDE4 for her so she got gui. She is more then comfortable with all the day to day tasks. Everyday she notices differences between her previous PCLinuxOS installation and current ArchLinux one and she asks questions. So far my answers do satisfy her needs for knowledge but each day the questions get more and more technical and sometimes I need to search the wiki for the answers myself.

Simple command 'date' displays all that You need to check what time - even noob like me knows that...

You want gui on arch - install and use it. I feel comfortable in the terminal - why would I need to remove all the gui just to get it? Arch is flexible and allows You to shape it to Your needs but like I said - it's not instantly usable.

I also disagree that this video will push people away from Linux. There are other videos that show that certain distros are more usable right after installation then others. That's the point.

Regards.

Andrzej

I was just imagining what monthly screenshots using W8 would be like  ;D

I agree with AndrzejL, and thought he didn't want her to learn linux even though he
seemed well trained in it. I don't understand why he didn't use some of the live CDs or
DVDs of linux to give her a taste.

That is one of the great features of linux over windows, you can run off a live version
and not have to install to see if you like or can use it.

I enjoyed the Mint video, and can see using some of the others to show folks differences in OS's.

Many folks are just plain use to one OS, and are afraid to try another.

I know from experience if you give them a chance to see what the others have to offer, and offer some hand holding (I use Teamviewer) they may be more open to suggestion of switching.

100% in agreement. This samples a turnoff for anyone coming from "comfortable Windows" having a try of Linux. Without this young fellow she would have switched of the thing within minutes.
People judge fast ......

I dunno.  The description in the videos states that his mother has only used Windows XP with the classic Windows 95 theme.  So, safe to assume she's familiar with day to day computing.  Knowing this, I will concede that her son does have some influence, but she's experienced enough to pick an OS she's comfortable with.  I'm just surprised she didn't pick Windows 7 or even the latest Mac OS.

It'd be interesting to know which OS she's using 6 months/1 year from now.

After watching the Windows 8 video, I think it's fairly safe to assume, she won't be using windows 8 (cartoony and childish)  ;D

the windows version 1(microsoft executive) video was cool to watch too  ;)

I actually watched quite a few of these videos, and got the impression that this young man is just carrying out an experiment using his mum as a lab rat (sorry Diana).

He's trying to find out which OS is easiest and most logical to use for a user (non tech).

He has a pre determined set of tasks, which he asks his mum to perform in each OS.
And asks her for her thoughts and opinions on each one.

Whether the young man is biased or not, I think the overall idea is good.
