My new voluntary "jobs"
« on: November 28, 2012, 08:13:14 PM »
Since I have now retired from paid work, I keep myself busy with two voluntary activities:

On Mondays, I spend four hours running the office for a support group, assisting those of us who have passed the age of 50. Here, the organization is called Grey Power. I know I could take my car to the office but, there is a bus every 40 minutes from the foot of our street. The bus goes right past the office. Here, holders of the so - called "Super Gold Card" (age over 65), are entitled to free bus or train urban transport between 9 am and 3 pm during the week, and anytime at the weekend. Therefore, I catch the 9.15 am bus to the office and the 2.20 pm bus back. If things at the office are quiet, I take along my laptop, with PCLinuxOS LXDE, and surf the net. The data cap is high enough that Grey Power doesn't mind my using some of it at all.

In the city of Palmerston North where I live, there is a neat little miniature Scenic railway (gauge 10.25 inches). Recently, I was trained to work as a voluntary Guard (Conductor) and I travel on the back, assisting young - and not so young - passengers on and off the train. The full circuit is just a bit over 2 km in length, with three stations.
This afternoon, I commenced training to work as a driver on the train. In the video that follows, the locomotive shown is the one that I did my training on. It is a quarter scale of the DX class locomotive made by General Electric in Erie, Pennsylvania.

How cool would it be to have a job such as that.  The closest  railway like that to me is at the zoo in Portland. They have 3 small scaled trains (narrow guage).  This is probably my favorite of the 3. It is called the Aero and was built by GM back in the 50's

I also like this 4-4-0 oil burning steam locomotive. It is a replica of the famous 4-4-0 Reno of Nevada's Virginia & Truckee Railroad.

Gosh jimwilk you have one cool job, I wish I could be so lucky

Update:

Last Saturday, I qualified to drive one of the locomotives. I did two complete circuits of the track with full loads of passengers each time. The next Saturday (December 22), I should also qualify to drive the other loco. Then, I will be able to play my full part in helping out. At this Southern Hemisphere time of the year - summer; schools on long vacation until end of January - the railway will be running 7 days per week. I will spend each Wednesday in January from 11 am to 5 pm, plus one day most weekends - working at the track.

Jim at one stage in my life i used to drive a train from the bottom of a park to the top,i say drive because that is what i did,it was a fairground ride,a mini car that was the engine and a few carriages,i loved it,at the same time we was restoring a narrow gauge complete with steam train to go all around the park, most track was there but overgrown, the loco was in a bad way and so was i,never saw it finished....good times :)

Further update.

The oldest locomotive in the fleet has just been totally recommissioned. It has now got hydraulic motors on each of the six axles. Single lever control makes driving this loco a dream. It will be given a public release on Saturday March 9 . I am now fully qualified to drive all three locomotives. Will be there today on duty from about midday.

That's a great 'Volunteer job' jimwilk. And the guy's who maintain these minature railways aren't half good for hanging out with, such a passion. Great way to waste some hours, ...  ;D

Tony,
On a visit to your fair city in 1992, we drove out to Belgrave and viewed the start of the Puffing Billy track. Later, we went up to Emerald and saw the train there - returning to Belgrave.
