Update problem

Hello all
Just installed LXDE. When I boot up I get a message from the Update notifier
An error occurred verifying upgrade:
this may be caused by held packages.
Do NOT Update!
Check Synaptic or try again later.

I open Synaptic, and the ftp.heanet.ie repo is selected.
I then changed KDE4 to KDE in the sections, else I get a message Could not
download all repository indexes etc. and
W: Release file did not contain checksum information for http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/base/pkglist.kde4

I reload after changing to KDE. Package information is downloaded ok and I select
Mark all upgrades.
I then click Apply.
There appear to be 169 packages to be downloaded.
Downloading carries on ok until 167 packages have been downloaded, when I receive a message
Some of the packages could not be retrieved from the server(s).
Do you want to continue, ignoring these packages?

I then select No.

I have tried 2 or 3 different repos and I get the same thing happening every time.
Can anyone advise ?

try a different repo, and see if it solved your problem. Who can read, is clear advantage

I had seen that message, but wasn't sure if it would apply in my case.
I did as it suggested, followed by running Synaptic.
Downloaded 175 files, installed most of them and then I received a message
APT system reports:
