Synaptic fails to launch

A couple of days ago, I updated the system.  Everything seemed to go fine.

Today, I tried synaptic again.  I entered the root password as requested...then nothing.  Tried again.  the same.

Apparently its not launching and I can't fins any messages in /var/log/messages.

Any ideas ?

Reboot your system (mostly this works).

Have a look at System Activities - Processes (Ctrl+Esc in KDE) ......  and if kdesu;kdesud  are running kill them, then try again.

If all else fails try launching it from a console window and see what error(s) it is displaying.

Funnily enough its working now.

I don't know why as it was shutdown daily, after I updated it (I have reconsidered the date and I updated on Thursday).  That means it has been shutdown and booted 5 times when the event happened.  I will see if it happens again or if it was just a weird quirk.

Thanks for the responses.  I'll tuck the advice away for the future.
