Nvidia gt 610 - how to install? SOLVED
« on: November 26, 2012, 05:49:00 PM »
I have just acquired a Geforce GT 610 video card, which works in its basic form, but I cannot work out how to install the correct drivers. The 610 is not listed in the configuration utility, the nearest being geforce 6100.  I can see posts in the forum about drivers being available, but I have been frightened off by the 157 page manual on nvidia's website on how to install them.
Is there an IDIOT's GUIDE??????
Hopefully......

Thanks, sounds good.... but WHICH one? As I said the gt610 isn't listed, so which of the other options is right? I tried the geforce6100, but that leaves me with no ability for desktop effects etc. Or does "the most recent" mean the nvidia furthest down the list?

does the video driver autoselected by pclinuxos work as you expect?

The video card not specifically mentioned on the list does not mean its capabilities and not recognized and fully utilized.

You should try to change it only when you know there is something missing,if not,you risk complicating your install for no real or perceived benefit.

There is no need to install anything from outside Synaptic.  The GT 610 is supported by the nvidia-current-304.51 driver which should already be installed on the system.  The correct procedure to configure the card is:

Go into PCC (Configure Your Computer) -> Hardware -> Configure Video Card
Select "NVIDIA GeForce 400 series and later"
When asked if you want to use the proprietary driver answer "yes"

Thanks for all the suggestions. Eventually I discovered that turning off "UMA" in the bios allowed the prop. driver to work, wobbly windows etc! And yes, the '400 driver is the one that works. Now all I've got to do is sort out the sound.......
