I am trying to update my kde 4.6.5  to 4.8.3 followin old-polack instructions

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108162.msg924314.html#msg924314

I got to the mark all upgrades -> apply and I get a message about broken packages.  Broken shows 6 broken packages; one of them is kdelibs.

I tried to follow the steps here

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108958.msg938943.html#msg938943

that is to just unmark the broken packages. All except kdelibs disappear once I unmark them. kdelibs won't go away, so I can't upgrade.

its more informative when reporting this kind of thing to give terminal output.

OPen the terminal, log in as root and then run these commands and give the output of the last one,say NO if asked to continue

apt-get update

apt-get dist-upgrade
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

You are trying to upgrade KDE 4.6.5 to 4.9.2, not 4.8.3.
Another forum member had the same issue:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,110780.msg945690.html#msg945690

He finally decided that Windows 8 was a better solution for him...

...... and prepare your hard disk to install from a new iso

....and which one would that be ?

Yeah, thanks . I forgot to put a smiley. You said: ...a new iso

The only problem with that is that the updating takes 4 to 5 hours over a ( sometimes ) busy internet connection.
I am not speaking for myself, but for others.

yes, the comment about using smileys so people doesn't think you are being disrespectful or sarcastic when doing that kind of replies you made, but of course those can help a bitto give a sense to your reply

Quick update

I reinstalled from the latest ISO two of my 4 machines. Overall it was incredibly smooth!

I use multiple vpn clients, so I backed up their settings (in /etc/ppp and /etc/vpnc.)

I have separate root home and var partitions on all my machines.  I selected to use existing partitions and only format root.  I only had one user account on each machine. I created a user account with the same name, and used the same passwords for that user account and root account as before.

Post installations, all my setting were preserved! LibreOffice Thunderbird and Firefox worked without a hitch (even updated their plugins correctly.)  I had to install some other applications and utilities that are not part of the default install (e.g. openconnect.)

I usually am not very good in giving compliments... this upgrade process is an amazing feat!
