[Answered] Addlocale Size Question
« on: November 23, 2012, 03:57:32 AM »
addlocale 4.2-3   as 65KiB rpm file - installed script is about 110KiB

The update which came through here today took a while to download so was noticeable and it appears to be

addlocale 4.2-4 in Synaptic showing as  434kB

This appears to be a huge jump in size.

Is this correct?

I have held the package for confirmation.

Thanks.

that is all correct. The package size has not really changed, besides the script itself the package also contains translation files.

Ah! Thanks. The translation files are now included in the RPM.

No wonder it has 'blossomed'  :D

nothing changed in the addlocale setup. For script applications (bash etc), the translation files (po-files) are always included in the rpm, they are "streamed" to the script when the respective language is in use. If the application is a compiled executable then the translations can be compiled into the executable.

So what accounts for the difference in size of the RPMs that I asked about?

there is no difference in the rpm file size, check the download file size in Synaptic:

addlocale 4.2-3: 65kb
addlcoale 4.2-4: 66kb

Finally!

It appears that - as I reported in my first post - my download of the package is incorrect.

I am thankful now that I held it back.

On checking the repository, it seems the package is actually 65KiB but for some reason Synaptic is reporting it as 434kB   :(

no, it isn't. You need to enable to show the Download-size in Synaptic.
