It's Easy (To Take This Place TOO Seriously)
« on: November 23, 2012, 12:48:16 AM »
In our everyday lives we have real relationships with our family and friends face to face.

We speak everyday language and "slang" with them and share common beliefs, both political and religious.

These common beliefs can be discussed freely in that environment because we already know that they are shared with the company that we keep.

Once we are in company that might NOT share our opinions however, things get a bit "dicey".

When that "company's" main goal is to be helpful to a crowd looking for specific information about a specific topic, then the success of that "company" relies on it's ability to supply help to the crowd.

We here at the forum do our best to supply help but a side effect,, or a by product (if you will) is that friends, or even families begin to form.

Now, we have a family from all over the globe that dose not share the same beliefs, political views or religion.

The only way to keep these differences from destroying us is to simply not discuss them, and it must be strictly enforced.

We are a family, but our politics, religion, and beliefs MUST be kept out of our discussions.

We all understand that we have different opinions about things but they have no place here.

And for good reason.  ;D

So true.
Heck, I can't even discuss these subjects with my relatives.

It is difficult, sometimes, to give an opinion on a subject without bringing one's beliefs into it.

Everyone has something that "pushes their buttons". I know I have mine.

It is up to the mods to decide and we should all defer to their decisions whether we agree or not.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. –

On the whole I agree. That's why I this time have refrained from posting in the thread about global warming. The problem, however, is that while climate change certainly is a political subject, it also is a technical subject.

And while our religious beliefs are irrelevant on the forum, it must be possible to discuss, for instance, the origins of Halloween or Día de los Muertos, subjects not entirely devoid of religious connotations.

I thought long and hard before speaking in this thread.

I agree with what Rudge said. The only thing I will add is that it has to be dealt with , with an even hand. If someone inadvertanly posts something wrong they should be notified and allowed to fix it without arbitrarily having a thread deleted.
And if these are rules then everyone should have to abide by them. I have had threads deleted and the next day see another thread started with things far worse than anything I might have posted and their thread remains. How do you think that makes me feel.

So rule with fairness not arrogance or favoritism.

Although I agree you shouldn't just go babbling on about politics and religions here, I don't keep quiet entirely.

I don't believe in being in the dark. There are times I will speak of the Lord. Politics is another story, lost interest in keeping up with them.

I wouldn't go on here or other forums and preach all over. If that's what you're trying to get across, I agree then.
I'm talking with a Buddist about the Lord at times. Key thing is, he is willing to hear. If he wasn't, I'd stop.

I had a thread deleted just the other day for saying far less than you just did.
Makes me quite unhappy. Not with you. I don't think you said anything wrong. And there in lies the rub.

Once upon a time uncleV and muungwana started speaking a bit on racism here.
muungwana is a black man, as it seems, and uncleV is a white man.

They started discussing very politely and ...hmm ... productively on this topic, the racism - what's good and what's bad.

They were almost immediately disrupted by a moderator.

-----------------------------------
Still uncleV thinks that was a good conversation and he is sure muungwana shares this opinion.

Ya know, I've never given that any thought until I read it here...and yes, I've read references to where he lives, what he speaks fluently, and it still didn't cross my mind.  He (she?  ;) -- just being facetious!) is just another person, it seems.

Yeah, me not being certain too.

But that doesn't matter much for me in this particular question.
