Black Friday Hp Printer
« on: November 22, 2012, 08:40:47 PM »
Several months ago, my brother as hing trouble with his Windows laptop.  Virus and malware laden, i wiped the hard drive and installed PCLinuxOS.  he loves it!  No more PC problems.

Okay, one problem...maybe.  He's waking up early to get to Staples' Black Friday sale  to get an HP all in one printer.  Advertised at $50.00.

I don't know if it's gong to be compatible with his PCLinuxOS laptop.  Plus, I may have to do a total reinstall because he hasn't updated since I first installed.

I'm thinking if I try and install a package for the printer, it may not work due to the rest of his system not being up to spec.

Or am I wrong?

I love the HP line of printers.  Very easy to use with PCLinuxOS.  But, don't know if it will go or not without an update.  Can you check to see if he has the "HP Device Manager" already installed?  If so, he may have a good chance it will work.

I've never found it a big problem to reinstall.  I have everything in home and just back that up.  I also keep a list of settings, extra programs I use, and firefox add-on's.  So after the reinstall & update, I just go thru the list and reset or add programs as needed.

Good luck to your brother.

Get the printer number/model and check for compatibility before purchase ....  would appear to be the sensible thing to do.

It's strictly anecdotal evidence, but for what it's worth, I have never had any problem with an HP printer and PCLinuxOS (or any Linux system, for that matter).

I have a 1300 series all in one HP printer and use it on 2 Sony VAIOs and one HP desktop. Never had any problems (except paying for expensive ink).

I have never had a problem using any of the several HP 3-in-1s that I have owned, in Linux.

There are HP printers that are not supported in Linux by HP.

So check out the Linux support before purchase!

I recently installed an HP 3510 all in one scanner and printer on PClos and it works great wireless.

PClos has the HP Device Manager app that you can configure the printer and see ink levels etc.....

And I think that's the very one he was considering buying.:)  Thank you and thanks to everyone else. Nice to know that HP will work.:)

Now that i know this, I just may upgrade my printer scanner. However, I need 8.5 x 14 scanning area.

Well, my brother did not get that HP printer/scanner.  After speaking to him, his needs would be better served by a Brother all-in-one.
We have the Brother MFC-7840CW in the office and my Lenovo PCLinuxOS notebook had no problems finding it and installing the drives. We checked out newegg.com and it appears this model is no longer offered. Instead, he's looking at a Brother HL-2280DW MFC.  It appears that the drives are not in the PCLinuxOS task-printing-misc package.   It would require an rpm package frorm Brother.

I've run into this with the other office printer the Brother 6490.  This one, is not supported via the package, either.
Any updates coming to this package which might include either of these printers?
