Is Miro safe to use with Linux?
« on: November 22, 2012, 07:34:59 PM »
I have had all kinds of trouble trying to download a movie--in fact, I haven't even been able to get one to start. I have downloaded most of the bit torrent clients in the repository and Firefox seems to have an issue with what I am trying to download.

Here is the message I get when I click on Get this torrent:

The address wasn't understood

Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (magnet) isn't associated with any program.

You might need to install other software to open this address.

According to the page at http://tpb.sourceforge.net/help/ "Download and install Miro from getmiro.com. It works on Windows, Mac, and Linux."

It is not in the repository so that is why I am asking. I would never put anything on my computer that is not in the repository without checking first.

You can find Miro 4.0.4-1 in repositories.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

The problem in this case is that you don't have magnet links associated with your torrent client in Firefox.
I use TransmissionQT for my torrents and it can handle magnet links without any problem once you create the association.

I read the thread and did what was suggested and it still didn't work for me. I clicked on the magnet link and got the same thing that I got before.

This works for me using ktorrent.

Right click on the magnet link and copy the link address. Then in ktorrent, click on open URL. It should automatically enter the address you copied.

Best of luck.

Thank you. I will try that. I haven't had any luck so far but maybe that will do it.

I just now tried it and it does seem to be working. I got some notice that something wasn't enabled and I would get better results if it were enabled but I didn't write it down so I don't remember what it was. But the movie I wanted seems to be downloading anyway.
