Printers/Scanner not printing

New to PCLOS & Linux.

Have recently installed PCLOS KDE (Kernel 3.2.18-pclos2.bfs) 64x. I have two printers Canon MP640 (printer/scanner) and an Epson Stylus Photo 1290. Both appear to have been recognised by the system and are said to be enabled, but if I try to print, the job is in the print queue (processing) and nothing comes out the other end. Having to rely on printing from my Windows (sorry !) laptop. With the MP640 scanner it is not recognised and if I try to add it manually it is not listed in the scanner setup.

Any suggestions as to how to unblock these problems? Simple solutions for a bear of little brain please.

Hope you are enjoying yourself with the puzzle that is linux.
Printers are a pain, always have been.

Have you done all the usual, are they plugged in, switched on, show up in PCC Control Centre, print a test page?

In the print queue is there a setting to release printing (it has not been stopped?)

You are in a web interface for CUPS. Administrator is root user. Anything there?

PS Bonus items:

Back up your personal files
Back up .kde4 desktop settings (cp -a .kde4 .kde4bak)
Back up your / system with say clonezilla or make-a-live-cd of your system (peace of mind)

Get the rpm version for PCLinuxOS.
