Help/Learning and for newbie!
« on: November 22, 2012, 10:46:20 AM »
I thought I would start this thread as I am having trouble keeping up with so many posts and questions! LOL
 I need a mentor sort of!? Background, I am really good with Windows XP have hacked the crud out of mine. custom boot screen, replacing notepad(LOL Windows doesn't like that!), etc.. But I have used a GUI mostly! Lost on cmds, that is why I want to learn Linux.
 Do to the fact I am now fully disable after a 3+ year fight with SS! I have lot's of time and space in my brain! LOL, also While in the US Army they told me my IQ was just below genius something 150+ I don't know that's what they told me! LOL
 Right now the computer I have is kind of old and weak by today's standard! P4 3.06w/hyper threading, 2gb. of memory and 6200 nv. card. I'll soon have something a little more modern as my friend gave me a motherboard with intel x58 and memory. Just a little faster! LOL Then I''l be able to run a vm.!
 Any suggestions on tuts. and learning??

 Let's start with some of my questions.
1.) Is a good idea to compress iso's to save room on a disk? I read in the GRUB.97 manual that it can uncompress on the fly!
2.) I really need to learn how to install stuff manually. Like RPM's and programs if you don't have the internet!
Trying to get my Netgear wna 3100 working but I need to updated ndiswrapper 1.55 or install 1.57 or newer. I have download ndiswrapper 1.57 and it's RPM and 1.58 RPM from softpedia. Any help on how to install one of these.
Also found an update

Add the following to ntoskernal_io.c

 wstdcall NTSTATUS WIN_FUNC(IoUnregisterPlugPlayNotification,1)
(void *tag)
{
      TRACE2("%p", tag);
      TODO(); /* Probably Not, legacy function abandoned in Windows 7 */
      IOEXIT(return STATUS_SUCCESS); /* Linux doesn't use it either */
}
 Can somebody tell where this files is? I have clicked show hidden files all over the place and did search and got no results! Not much help there, I am sure I am not doing something right.
 I thank you for your time!!

For help with commands, I find that the O'Reilly book, "Linux in a Nutshell," subtitled "A Desktop Quick Reference" to be very handy.
It turns out you can get it free in a pdf download, but it's over 900 pages, so I'm not sure how useful that would be.  Here's the url:
                                                          http://it-ebooks.info/book/403/
To buy it, it's $50, or it was when I bought mine several years ago.  (I have no connection to or financial interest in O'Reilly books.)
I find that I use it about once a week, and I'm not even a programmer!

Relative to rpms:  Most (but not all) of what you'd like to use is available in the PCLOS repos.  However, rpms designed for SUSE or
Fedora will usually work, even tho not supported.  IOW, you won't get any help here if you use one of these programs and it doesn't
work, or crashes.  There is a category in this forum where you can ask that a certain program you'd like to use be added to the repos.
Read the instructions as to what you information you need to supply when you request an addition.  And there's no guarantee that
it will be added, , , ,

Good luck with it.  --doug

noob420,

ntoskernel_io.c (not ntoskernal) is part of the source tarball. (A tarball is a compressed archive.)

Your safest option would be to ask that ndiswrapper be updated to 1.57 in the repo.

But if what you have downloaded is ndiswrapper-1.57.tar.gz (and don't mind borking your system) you can compile it yourself. The instructions are in a textfile called INSTALL in the folder ndiswrapper-1.57, which you have to extract from the tarball.

If you are running KDE you can extract it by simply right-clicking the ndiswrapper-1.57.tar.gz icon and choosing "Extract" > "Extract Archive Here, Autodetect Subfolder".

Or you could run the command
Code: [Select]
tar -xzf ndiswrapper-1.57.tar.gz in a terminal after having navigated to wherever the downloaded file is.

You didn't follow the rules. It has been moved.
You need to provide the information as in the rules. Discussion in a package request is not allowed. Descriptions of problems you are having is unnecessary. Provide only the information as is requested in the rules.

Having an installation dedicated to mucking about and learning is a good idea.

OK
 I went and got a WD ex. 1tb usb drive. I noticed in boot menu usb hhd as a boot choice! I have installed pclos on it. I can get to the internet with it using another computer that works with pclos! I have updated and downloaded the stuff I need to try and get everything working. I really want to learn this! I also ordered a usb wireless that is on the linux good list. I still will try to get the wna3100 working as it is a problem and it might help someone else!
 Wish me luck!
 I am going to try ndiswrapper 1.57. Have the rpm downloaded(from softpedia) to my download folder in home, installed rpm installer, windows drivers on a flash drive, I believe that should do it.
 If it works and my system doesn't muck up, how do I go about getting ndiswrapper pclos OK'ed??
