Troublesome purchase [(Un)resolved, closed]
« on: November 21, 2012, 09:50:22 PM »
Here I am, a long time AMD fan and it was time for a new laptop. So I look for AMD and found it. Things has changed!

I find out soon PCLinuxOS (Linux) has no answer to this.....  Ough!
What happens is it installs fine but has no proper driver for the Audio and video.
Most annoying!  Sideways scrolling needed and no volume control.
Went to try some kernels(including 3.4.11 from testing) but no joy...
Wonder if anyone here could help for I am stocked with this thing.

All works, like wifi etc. It is just these two items that spoils the fun (big time!)

00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 9808 (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 14b7
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
        Memory at b0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
        I/O ports at f000 [size=256]
        Memory at feb00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
        Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [58] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00
        Capabilities: [a0] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
        Capabilities: [100] Vendor Specific Information: ID=0001 Rev=1 Len=010 <?>

00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Wrestler HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6250/6310]
Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Wrestler HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6250/6310]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 49
        Memory at feb44000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [58] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00
        Capabilities: [a0] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
        Capabilities: [100] Vendor Specific Information: ID=0001 Rev=1 Len=010 <?>

It tries to use a intel driver for sound and has no clue about video.

It runs now on vesa but with a terrible resolution.

Anyone knows about a solution? Is it a (too old) kernel problem, a driver problem?

Your card seems quite new. Latest AMD drivers are not yet in stable section of our repository. Please wait some more time or you could try the one in "testing" if you feel adventourous.

Looks like it is an APU. More information here:
www.another distro.com/certification/hardware/201206-11417/

EDIT : Please substitute *buntu (u in the place of *) to correct the link above.

Can you post the model and specs of your laptop?

My netbook is running an AMD C-60 processor with Radeon HD 6250 graphics, and it is doing fine.  I had to tweak some settings to get the sound, and I can look up what I did, but it would be helpful to know exactly what hardware you are working on.

The ATI Radeon driver may work on that video system. Not all of the features may be supported but should work better than a generic VGA driver. My info says it works on 98xx. As for the audio system, a driver doesn't seem to be available yet. There is an HDMI project working on it. Not really fair to blame ATI, these are fairly new systems and Linux drivers have to be written for them.
Always best to check Linux hardware compatibility before purchase.
Good luck with the Radeon driver and be patient on the Wrestler driver.

The HDA Intel driver for audio should be working.

It is most likely that the lack of sound is due to the HDMI  audio device being the default rather than the on board audio card.
There are a number of threads on the forum about adjusting this, if it is the cause.

Any chance of making the above specs more readable as that format is extremely difficult to read.

Please wrap any Konsole output within CODE and /CODE tags. That makes them easier to read.

W.r.t. laptop models, it is important to have the full model name as written on a sticker attached to your laptop bottom. Because with a single small digit change, specifications change. And each gross model name will have many many regional variations. ASUS 401U is not enough detail.

Anyway, a basic search of the internet makes me think that you have an APU from AMD that has either E2-1800 with Radeon 7340 or E1-1200.

First try installing the following from our regular repository section:
- dkms-fglrx
- fglrx-control-center
- x11-driver-video-fglrx
Try to set video through PCC and see how it does after a reboot.
If it does not work, you will need to enable "testing" section of repository and update only the above said items. Then remember to disable "testing"

All the best.

NOTE : AMD APUs have been known to have problems waking from Suspend to RAM or Suspend to disk while using fglrx. So better to disable sleep from power settings or else you will lose anything you had not saved before Suspend kicked in. The free radionhd driver however does not have this problem.

For sound, first check your mixer. See what the master channel is set to and what is current mixer being used. If it says anything HDMI, probably you wont have sound. Choose the other options and test.

That's all what is given on the sticker....

It is E2 ..... Radeon I can't determen as "ATI Device 9808" is all what is detected.

First try installing the following from our regular repository section:

Will do so, thanks.

All the best.

OK, found out that all that stuff
- dkms-fglrx
- fglrx-control-center
- x11-driver-video-fglrx
is installed here.  (I install from a remaster up to date)

NOTE : AMD APUs have been known to have problems waking from Suspend to RAM or Suspend to disk while using fglrx. So better to disable sleep from power settings or else you will lose anything you had not saved before Suspend kicked in. The free radionhd driver however does not have this problem.

Yes, the mixer is "mixed up". If I do tests in Phonon I actually hear sound. But that is where the fun stops and also there is no volume control possible. (Volume 0%)
The mixer shows IEC958 as active .... I can see there the "real thing" as well but can't get it to take over as default.

Probably you have not looked carefully. There should be something in addition to the model number that you have mentioned.
Check this out:

ASUS X401U-WX032V - http://www.which.co.uk/technology/computing/reviews/laptops/asus-x401u/review/
Code: [Select]
Processor          AMD C-60 APU
Graphic adaptor AMD Radeon HD 6290

Asus X401U-EBL4 - http://dealspl.us/Laptop_deals/p_asus-x401u-ebl4-14-laptop-amd-e1-1200-4gb-320gb
Code: [Select]
Asus X401U-EBL4 14" Laptop (AMD E1 1200)

ASUS X401U - http://mobileraptor.blogspot.in/2012/08/asus-x401u-versus-asus-x401a.html
NOTE : At places on this page they mention the model number as X410U but it could be typo as such a model is not there on ASUS website.
Code: [Select]
AMD E2-1800

So there are 3 already known variations for the same model.
MORAL OF THE STORY : Full model number is crucial :)

--------------------

Also note that I have used CODE and /CODE tags in this post for demo purpose only ;)

OK (had to sleep a bit), in political terms "as I indicated" mine has a E2 1800 dual core processor (1.7 GHz)

I found in the warranty card indeed a additional number, so it is a X401U-WX050 Strange enough I can't find that on the machine itself.

This site gives all info and more:
http://www.ilonggotechblog.com/2012/08/the-new-asus-x401-notebook-price-specs.html

But there I found this:  GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7340 graphics

That is not what I see here (HD 6250/6310)   .... Confusing stuff!

I walked in a trap after 14 year AMD/Linux use (mainly in combination with nVidia as ATI sucked heavily in my early Linux years with their lack of Linux drivers). I thought when they bought ATI that they would improve ATI but it seems ATI brought AMD on the wrong path re Linux instead. :) :)

But I am in the boat now and have to see what can be done, with you guys help.  ;)

fglx stuff updated from testing meanwhile, no improvement.
Downloaded the latest ATI driver 12.11 beta and plan to try to install that one.
See what the day brings.

A good start!
The amd-driver-installer-catalyst-12.11-beta8-x86.x86_64 does work well. The video card is still seen as device 9808 and it uses fglrx as driver but this time I got a decent resolution and 24 bit. I can sure live with that.

Now sound .........   ::)
