Sound ok in kmplayer but no sound in vlc..

Hi

I have sound in kmplayer when looking at *.avi file but no sound in vlc 
Furthermore there is no startup sound 
I use alsa.

IIRC, use the command 'alsaconf' as root.  I don't want to try it because I have PulseAudio.  From Synaptic:

ALSA configuration tool
Alsaconf is a tool that enables one to configure his sound card with ALSA.
It's often not not needed as PCLinuxOS will autoconfigure sound cards.
