This info may not have any relevance to this thread but I have already reported the config option on SystemSettings > Common
> Appearance and Behavior > Application Appearance > Icons > Advanced > Panel ... which had been broken throughout the 4.x.x SC. One of the KDE devs suggested that the config option be killed.

Hmm... Funny then :)
That is the reason why any number of tweaks by me on that option had no effect whatsoever!
Thanks Archie. I will give up on that.

Watching a few bug reports on KDE, watching what every one is doing to OSes/DEs in general right from mobile to desktop (Mac, Win 8, Gnome and gradually even KDE) saddens me a lot. It seems being straight jacketed is the way. Freedom / choice are to be disabled step by step.

Modus operandi:
- Take a feature filled software.
- Blame the devs for making it too complicated.
- Reduce features / customisability in the name of streamlining.
- Drop an existing feature if it does not work properly instead of fixing it.
- Progressively end up with only a blank window ;)

Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

Well, I guess the non-functioning settings will be left as it is ... at least that was what's indicated by a top KDE dev, Aaron J. Seigo.

while it is no longer used as the strict definition of what size icons will be
in the panel, it is used as a default size and size hint for icons and as such
is still in use.

Quicklaunch is the answer.

I use a wide panel, you don't have to.  The large icons are open windows and widgets.  The blank space is the unused part of the "Smooth Tasks" widget.

Where to get it? Not in repo. Not getting via plasma addons either.

But you already showed us you had it installed.  ???

Yeah I mentioned Quicklaunch earlier and have it installed ......  but it no longer appears to be available in the repo  :( .......  or I have not found it there .....

At least on 64 bit it's part of kde-workspace-core. Will check in 32 bit when I find time to reboot.

Edit: And there it seems to be in KDE 4.9.2 too: kde-workspace-core-4.9.2-1_archie_2012.

My error BB .......  yes it is in the same package in 32 bit.

What threw me off is that the search function for the plasma widgets appears to be failing here ....  so I did not find it when I looked .......  so now I have something else to go solve  :(

Sorry about the misinfo  ;)

The screenshot I showed you was from Windows 7 on the same laptop. It was just an example to show what I wanted.

----------------------

I am really sorry for the confusion. I can confirm now that Quicklauncher is indeed there in default widget list. I somehow missed it in my previous look through. Sorry again.

In my installation I get a triangular up pointing arrow to show hidden items which is not there in ternor's screenshot. Need to ask, how to get rid of it?

That holds icons for items for which there is not room to display.
I suppose reducing the number of items running in the tray would get rid of it.

Ah, that explains the Windows start button.  :D

Is there any similar replacement for system tray where I can reduce the individual icon size and possibly have it in a 2 row fashion?

The triangle, from memory, represents the quicklaunch widget and should go away when you click on it.  I believe I only saw it when doing something to the widget.  I tried to get it back just now by moving icons to different positions and by adding then removing another launcher but none of that produced a triangle.

I find adding widgets to the panel is often difficult but adding launchers to the quicklaunch widget never gives any trouble.

Ahh the panel.... think of the task bar as the partition. Widgets you put on the left side of the task bar goes to the left. Ditto to the right.
