good morning to all.
     I trashed my system yesterday (kde updated version) I reloaded the existing partitions as I have done many times before and the desktop came up just as  I had left it with all of my personal settings. I clicked on the k menu and nothing happened. I clicked on my toolbar icons and nothing happened. I entered the system as root user and entered a new identity with its own desktop to salvage all my data but I sure would like  to get that desktop working again . Can anyone help

I have no idea what is happening. Just try some harmless things:
- Reboot.
- Check permissions for files within your user folder. The reinstallation might have caused the permissions to change. (You may have to use "chown" command to get it right.)
- Wait for better advice.

I have found that a live-cd logged in as root will aloww you to retrieve all your files.
Then redo your desktop by reloading the system over
then put your files back in the refreshed desktop folders.

Good to hear you trashed your system, keep doing it.
I trashed mine yesterday playing around. Recovered it in about 5 minutes with clonezilla.

Desktop settings for all users are in a hidden dot file .kde4. Always keep a backup of .kde4.

New system, old /home directories?

As root in a terminal:

chown -R user1:user1 /home/user1
chown -R user2:user2 /home/user2

If partitions need reattaching use the PCC Contol Centre (make sure you do not have two different /home directories)

If the install is doing odd things do you have a good install?

    system was upgraded in july .I already have opened a new user and re-allocated all my date files. as a fellow user I am sure you have set up your desktop to your special needs. Thats where I am right now .Yes reinstall seems to be working well in root as well as new user just not in original user. will check the info you asked for and get back to you. (holiday sleepovers )
