@ Blarney.
Thanks for that update, maybe you need a post in the 'Help' forum part (if you do put a link on this post to it ), my order is to be shipped tomorrow so I may try a home made live CD of my daughters laptop as it is now (It's an Acer aspire 5738z with a fully updated latest kernel , KDE Minime.) and see how we go with that.
Which model laptop did you get ?.

My model is the same as yours I think. I didn't get the Nvidia option. Just the Intel chipset.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on. Pclinuxos wasn't the only distro that didn't play well with the hardware. I tried the latest kubuntu 12.10 and that also had graphical problems. The sweet spot seems to be Linux Mint 13 KDE of those I tried. I'm sure given the correct kernel/intel driver version that Pclinuxos will also be able to use this hardware.

For the moment, having spent several hours getting Mint to look like Pclinuxos and copying all data files across I'm going to stick with it. My desktop will remain firmly with Pclos. When newer kernels come out of testing I'll try again with the laptop.

Cheers,
Blarney

It's not completely impossible to put those drivers in lesser kernels,
I doubt Mint has a 3.6.5, but I'm sure it's cumbersome.

I'd install do-vesa from Synaptic and run do-vesa from the console as
root and reboot into vesa then.   It works 90% I guess except for some
fast action movies, in the interim from getting drivers from xorg, etc..

Have a good one.

No problems with the video card, sound, internet etc.
The only problems I thought I had was getting the Wifi working, I spent a lot of time looking for the problem that was not there !.
I found that I had to switch on the Wifi on the keyboard after I booted  ;D oop's then configured it and the wifi works ok .

Is it normal on some laptops to have to switch on the wifi each time you boot ? (you can tell I'm not used to laptop's ) ;D

Great news! I don't understand why I had so many problems with the graphics on a full kDE install... I'll boot Minime on it and see if it works on mine.

It does not stay on I will put a post on the forum if I cannot get it to stop on .
Yes full resolution, once installed just had to change the settings to fill the screen.

Booting into the live CD on the default settings gave a blank screen so then I tried the is it called 'video safe mode' about the third one down the list, but once installed had no problems.

As I only installed this as a test I will have time before xmas to test out Full KDE and a few more LXDE etc before I use my live CD off her old laptop to put all her settings back .

Merry Xmas

Don't know this laptop, at all, so these are just guesses!

Wireless:
Check the BIOS (UEFI?) if there is a setting related to wireless (state at power on; controlled by OS, etc.)

Video:
Sounds like you're running plain VESA mode (which is fine for undemanding applications - no 3D, no HW video acceleration, etc.).  There may not be support for this card in PCLOS yet, with the current kernel/drivers...

Remember, don't take my word for the above...you're investigations will educate us!

Just a bit more of an update,
I found in the bios settings how to make the wifi switch stay on.
I have installed on the hard drive as a test, Minime 2012.8, LXDE & KDE 2012.12, all installed ok and updated ok, wifi works ok but had the problems with the 'wpa_supplicant' file on LXDE, with not being able to connect to the network with wifi I did not bother to connect an 'Ethernet' cable I went to the wpa_supplicant in /etc via a 'super file user' and removed the last two entries at the bottom of the page, went to pcc and set up wifi again, worked ok and still works ok..
Video drivers seem ok, the 'intel 810 and later' driver is working OK ( not bothered about 3D or HD and it's Not in VESA mode ), sound ok.
Seems a nice laptop, http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/laptop-computers/ just configure what you want and they get them from http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/products/item.asp?procatalogID=7
