Little problem with an old computer
« on: November 20, 2012, 12:12:42 PM »
It was running Phoenix until the last up grade killed it. It was running great for about 4 yrs..
It had two users on it and Firefox and all usb plugins worked. I installed Lxde 2012.06iso and it seems faster then Phoenix was, but the usb ports front and back don't work and firefox only works for 500 user and not for 501 user. I'm using that computer right now, but it is on a different floor in the house and I only keep it up dated for my son. Just before I sent this I plugged the Logitech usb camera in the one front usb and the light lit at the top of the camera.
The thumb drive gets no response what so ever.

what kernel is using that version you installed?  if it is not using kernel 2.6.38, you could install it and try again the ports

also have you saved the old users?  sounds like a permission problem, but i don't understand how that works well enough to give a good recommendation

It was all a new install, reformatted hard drive and installed from live CD.

You should try the older kernel for usb problem...

Do you have two users generated? They have the place on /home/<user1> /home/<user2>, but firefox wont work for <user2>?

I installed, listed the second user with Manage user on your system, like I do with many installs.

Just a thought on the thumb drives, I bought a new one and couldn't do anything with it after reformatting it (read only - no write), checked the permissions and it was root, changed it to "user" and all is good now. Using 3.2.18-pclos2.pae.bfs kernel and LXDE
Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

If you format it NTFS permissions don't matter, if you format it ext4 without
flex_bg (^flex_bg)  it'll work faster but with full permissions, etc..

Did you copy over the home directories of the two users, new system, old /home directories?
In which case permission issues

Fix open up a terminal as root:

# chown -R user1:user1 /home/user1
# chown -R user2:user2 /home/user2

Fixed (O-P tip)

UpDate
90% of my installs are done on Clean, Formatted hard drives nothing saved from older install.

Problems with the two live CDs I used
LXDE-2012.06.ISO and Mini Me 2012.08.ISO

Both quit while running as live CD with the blue slide bar over n.
Pressing num lock got no response.

On both CDs using load in safe mode it would load and both would let me install to hard
in this mode.

I have minime on this computer now and all the usbs work and multi users works.

I don't know if I discovered a way to install with a live CD or DVD that wouldn't load by
using save mode or not, but it worked for me.

I will leave this posted until this weekend and then remove. If the mods want to move it
some place they might think useful before hand please do.

Here is the info on the old computer:
