[SOLVED] PDF Reader
« on: November 20, 2012, 11:37:52 AM »
I newly come from Windows so need help to understand the idiosyncrasies of Linux. I need to install a PDF plugin for my browser (Mozilla Seamonkey) and under Windows that was a straightforward installation of Adobe Reader. I have tried to search for such through Synaptic but can find nothing obvious, but with the way Linux names packages that can be hard for a newcomer.

Going to the Adobe site shows that there are a number of downloads suitable for Linux, but they have file-types such as .deb, .bin, .rpm and tar.bz2. I don't know which would be appropriate and even if I did, I do not know how I then install them. Your wisdom and patience appreciated.  :)

I have PCLOS KDE installed.

Both Adobe Reader and Foxit Reader (my preference) are in the repos (Synaptic).  It should be simply a matter of marking one  (or both) for installation (after a full update, that is).

Making SeaMonkey use them may be slightly more difficult, but if it is as closely related to Firefox as I suspect, it shouldn't be that tough.

As The Chief mentions there is an Adobe Reader in the repos;  in Synaptic if you do a search using just adobe as the search term that should show it near to the top of the list.

Before doing the search I'd advise first doing a Reload to refresh your application list.

Hi Chief! Thanks for your quick reply. Don't know how I missed it in Synaptic before, but....when I selected it to install I got the following:

Could not mark following packages for installation or upgrade.
The following packages have unresolved dependencies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences

AdobeReader-plugin
Depends: AdobeReader_enu but is not installable.

Any suggestions?

yes, you do not need the AdobeReader-plugin because it is already included in the package AdobeReader_enu. The AdobeReader-plugin package is outdated and will be removed as soon as possible.

Use foxitreader, AdobeReader is bloated. Ocular is in the repos and is another good pdf reader.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Have installed foxitreader and will have to find out how to plug it into Seamonkey! Before I close this as solved could you deal in general with the second paragraph of my original post:

i.e installing such filetypes as there are other matters such as drivers that I am not clear about.
Thanks

You do not need anything from the Adobe site. Always use packages from Synaptic.

I think PCLinuxOS KDE version have Okular by default ( kde-graphics-okular 4.9.2-1_archie201 ) and that is a good reader, if you don't have it please:

Reload - mark all upgrades - apply - apply

Search okular - right click install - apply

It integrates automatically in Firefox, sorry I don't use Seamonkey.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

I installed Seamonkey to see what it is like .........  and opened immediately a PDF from this site

http://samplepdf.com/sample.pdf

I guess the plugin for Firefox must also apply to Seamonkey .......  as they are both from the Mozilla stable.

Thanks Crow & Just17. Have installed Okular and it works perfectly. :)

Don't want to seem a pain but could someone answer the other part of the question. If one downloads a non-repository file with a file-type of perhaps .deb, .bin, .rpm and tar.bz2, what are the processes to install them?

It is my understanding that file association takes precedence. If you have, say for example, associated PDF with Qpdfview, opening a .pdf file either from your /home folder, any removable disk, anywhere on the Internet would be viewed on Qpdfview unless a specific setting overrides the file association.

Seamonkey used to be The Mozilla Suite, before Firefox(formerly firebird) & thunderbird became a lot more popular.
