"I am aware that this is not a Linux nicely compatible camera"

why? is it a model that doesn't have a usb mass storage device mode and only a mtp mode?

give us more information to know why you say this and what you have tried to download images from the device

Get yourself a USB memory card reader if your computer doesn't have a dedicated SD / SDHC / SDXC memory card slot (which some laptops do have). USB memory card readers look just like a USB stick but it has a slot that accepts a SD / SDHC card.

I've always just pulled the SD memory card out of cameras instead of hassling with cables and wondering if the camera will be recognized. Easy-peasy.  ;)

+1

I always take the card out of the camera. It's way faster than downloading the photos through the camera bottleneck.

Click the "Split View" button in Dolphin and just drag and drop. Easy-peasy :D
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

I have a fuji s3200 and I know if I use a SDHC / SDXC I can not read them on my laptop or my desktop.  I have no problem with the plain old SD cards.  If I hook the camera to either the laptop or desktop with the USB I have no issues downloading the images with digikam

Looking at my laptop specs I am assuming that it can not read the SDHC/SDXC cards

External readers (for a variety of card types) are cheap.  I have a USB SanDisk reader that I bought for somewhere near 15 dollars that will read just about anything.  Has never failed me yet.
