hehehehe

No offense at all aguila  ;)  unfortunately I have known many people who like to resist new learnings.

I have friends who retired from life at an early age, they still go to work but only talk about the day they won't have to do it anymore; on the other hand, I have found many retired people in this forum who doesn't stop learning and trying new things, I guess age has nothing to do with laziness or (as some friend called it) "different interests".

Georgetoon probably your friend doesn't have the original disks but he have a valid license number that can be used with another copy of Vista
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

people confuses copy with the license itself

you can use any disc you have while it matches the license

if the license looks like this one

you will need a windows vista home ultimate installation disc, if it says professional the starter disc won't work

the procedure is just install vista using the right disc, whatever source you get it, original or a iso downloaded from msdn or borrowed from a friend and then when it asks for the 25 letter and number key, write the one on the coa in the hp case, that is all

or it activates it automatically or you have to call microsoft to complete the process

I believe Windows Vista is now officially unsupported, except Professional versions which will continue to get security updates for a further five years. That means no one should use it on the net as it will become increasingly insecure and will not be patched. XP will go on with security updates until 2014.

You need to advise your neighbour he needs to change, whatever he changes to.

Linux is free and will run on his existing hardware. Mac will cost him money, but it's up to him.

"I believe Windows Vista is now officially unsupported"

from microsoft support website

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/lifecycle

it will be supported by microsoft until 2017, 10 years they must support each version of their os afik with the exception of xp that will be supported until 2014, 13 years of support

the os patched or not will remain insecure, just as xp is or win7, without antivirus and a good web browser, you shouldn't run any version of windows

If you use Vista for local programs only and don't surf the web in Windows I think it will be okay. For everything else than these Win only applications there'll soon be PCLOS on the box. ;D
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Ok people, remember you are only as old as you act!  Some people here are acting like a batch of four year olds.  But don't look to me as a father figure, as I act younger than that.

My Mum is 79, will be 80 on the 24th of December, which is handy as I just give her a combined Birthday, and Xmas present.

She has bad Arthritis in her fingers, some of the joints go at 90 degree angles. I hadn't noticed, so making shortcuts on desktop, or Quicklaunch, or favourites has had to be the way.

For example, it took mr five hours to teach her to "Right Click" in WinXP, a Desktop Icon I renamed 'Emai'; then "left click" open, to open 'outlook express' (Email client)  in Windows.
The questions; "Why do I 'right click' that one. and 'left click' other ones'.

Oddly she writes a great letter with pen and paper.

Some Classics: "But why are you saying "Default Sretting", that doesn't make any sense. Maybe 'Factory Setting' is more easily understood.

It really does open a whole new world when people who have never used a Computer hear the terminology, and the actions we take for granted, like Right, and Left clicking, plus being intuitive.

And of course, each 'oldy' has had a very different life, and experiences, depending what fields they worked in earlier in life.
You've gotta love em though, whether they're your parents, or just Old and require some simple help time.

As I said teaching Mum to open one program: Five hours, due to her Arthritis.
Have got her another Comp, with a special mouse, plus Win7, she likes it !  :D

Please note: Extended support is only available for commercial customers.

I take it the OP's neighbour is not a commercial customer. Therefore his support ended on 10th April 2012.

the commercial support is more related to pay for phone solutions from what i understand, still you will find programs for it and the most critical patches

"If you use Vista for local programs only and don't surf the web in Windows I think it will be okay. For everything else than these Win only applications there'll soon be PCLOS on the box."

a friend uses a laptop with vista for web surfing and no problems have happened, before that he used xp sp3 unpatched for years

the patches only fixes specific problems that you or won't find or doesn't do much if you don't install crapware with trojans or malware in it, in most situations the antivirus is the responsible for your protection in windows because the os itself doesn't do a thing to protect itself

My neighbor's support has always been me.:)  He calls me up and I take a walk down the road.:)  He's experienced several problems in the past and I've been able to fix them.

Prior to his buying a system, he was considering a Mac. His friend was talking up Apple. I was encouraging him to give Linux a try.  He went with the HP running Vista due to price.

I've tried to give him balanced advice. I haven't discouraged/encourged one system over the other. Although, I have pointed out Windows security flaws.

My mom is on PCLinuxOs. no problems & it does everything she needs.
Me also.
My dad is stuck on Windows for a bit.
He's running quickbooks for his business.
There is no easy way to export all his info into a linux based app.
Especially his invoices & customer information.
It would take way to much manual input.

They knew what they were doing when they created that proprietary format.

He doesn't want to use the virtual machine either.
Can't blame him on that.

I do not understand the objection to using a VM.  I am running the latest KDE version of PCLOS.  All of my web browsing, email, word processing and spreadsheet work is done in the linux environment.  However, I need windows to run the company accounting system; a visual foxpro front end with an MS SQL Server data store.  This is in a LAN and the process has been trouble free since I started almost ago year now.

This process allows me to use windows where needed, but not expose my system to the security problems.  The windows VM is never exposed to the internet.

USE LINUX IN COMBATING FRAUD.

In reply to TONY, I was also called recently 3 times by "this is Windows..." (sic) in a decidedly Indian accent, saying that my PC had been hijacked. The first time the smell of rat was overwhelming so, for fun, I talked 'computer-speak' to him for about 15minutes (I know far less about computers than I ought, but I speak the lingo very well) until, in the end, he swore at me and rang off. The third time was a very sweet young (Indian) lady. After the initial preamble I said "I don't understand, I use LINUX". There was a half minute pause then she said "OK, thank you" and rang off!

Re AGUILA <remove Win from GRUB menu or rename it "Virus Infection"> I like it! I am off to my dual boot now. Many thanks.

Re "there are quite some people here that are older than you and me together"  I don't normally have much to say to infants, I prefer more mature people like my young friend Methuselah.

After reading iddlly's post, I'm kinda hoping I get one of those "Windows/MS" phone calls. ;D ;D

I see Quickbooks at work. At home I run VirtualBox to backup my QB data.  I run t when needed.  No problems.:)
