Drak3d problem with LXDE ?
« on: November 18, 2012, 06:24:51 AM »
The other day I upgraded my daughters pc running XFCE, and met the Drak3d problem mentioned in the
XFCE forum, eg. http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,110836.0.html

Today I upgraded mine to see if the same thing would happen, and it did.

I gather from other posts in the XFCE forum that until a new iso is released there is no way round this short of reinstalling and manually selecting updates. Since she is computer illiterate, and only uses it for emails etc this is not an
option, so I have decided to investigate LXDE. Her pc is too old to run KDE or Gnome, and apart from that I don't think
that she would find them usable. (This of course applies only to KDE4 and the latest Gnome. Earlier versions
of these may well be ok, but they seem to be no longer available.)

If I do  switch to LXDE, am I likely to run into the same problem on updating ?
I can find no mention of Drak3d on this forum, so am hoping that this means that the
problem does not exist in this case.

Can anyone advise me ?

TIA

My graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce GT 630.

I cannot run glxinfo | grep 'direct rendering' because like all of the others who had this
problem with XFCE and reported it in the forum I am unable to log in, just a loop of being told that I am trying to
run Drak3d and need administrator privileges, entering the root password when prompted,
selecting switch off 3d effects, being told to reboot, rebooting and the whole loop repeating
ad infinitum.

Maybe you should use XFdrake to repair your video problem...
Or you should use latest LXDE-Mini to reinstall your XFCE-Desktop.
Or when you have connection to internet with the comp from your daughter, try
Code: [Select]
apt-get update && apt-get install task-lxdeand see if it bring back your X-Server...

mh just caused by headless updating and not by the dependencies of xfce

why did you update your machine when you read the other thread and already broke your daughters system? I can't and i won't understand this.

if your internet is connected on startup you can switch to a terminal like window with ctrl + alt + f1 login as root there and do a

Code: [Select]
apt-get install task-xfce

but you probably have to wait one or two days currently is one package left in testing which is needed but i already sent the boss a pm to move it in the right section. if he has done is it will be available in hours or days dependent of your used repo.
The full life is a big mess
