Me being hero, stupid hero. A note to newbies like me.
« on: November 17, 2012, 12:09:42 PM »
Today I had to include a router in our home for to my daughter to use her office toplap at home.
Never knew of local or worldwide settings of network.

Yeah... being a hero ... I didn't read anything and just started trying to launch it.

It took me 4 or 5 hours until I realised the router is an Internet device too and have just to use the MAC and IP address of my ISP on it.

I had a success but given I've read the Wikipedia, for example, I'd do it in half an hour.

So please don't be such a hero like me - RTFM men! ;) :D ;D

That's the way real men (and your daughter) learn things. Manuals are for wimps.  :D ;)

And by the way, I love the term "toplap". If pocket-pickers are called "pickpockets", why shouldn't a laptop be called a toplap?

It should. That's a term I will use.

My son just got Black Ops 2 Call of Duty and was cursing the fact he could not get logged into an online game.  Of course Dad was called to try to diagnose and fix the problem from 10 miles away.  Googling the problem from my house yielded similar nightmares lots of other buyers were having.  At first glance it appeared not enough infrastructure was in place to handle the glut of connections for this new game.  BUT......I got a follow up call later that night: my son finally read the instructions, disabled his router firewall and.....he's in.  Sometimes it does pay to Read The Fantastic Manual.  Now I have to remind him to put the firewall back up......  There must be a port setting he can use to make it work with the rest of the firewall up and running.  Manual?  We don't need no stinkin' manual !  :)

Manual, didn't use a manual to install my OS, why would I need to read it for other things?  Who cares about the extra things the new TV does, as long as it gets the channels I want during the news.
