I've had several issuse's with the new upgrades, but try kscd from the repo's
this should allow you to play your cd's when inserted.

Thank you. I have been using KsCD and my system is fully upgraded (I upgrade it often, probably at least once a week).

Put the liveCD into the drive and open Dolphin.

Is the liveCD listed under the 'Places' menu at the left of Dolphin?

If it is listed what happens when you click on the entry? .....  does Dolphin display a list of files on the media or do you get an error in the Dolphin window?

Please post the exact error if one appears.

Yes, I have a cd in the drive and have opened dolphin. There is no error message but it doesn't do anything when I click on devices. I guess in this case no errors are not good because if there was some kind of obvious error it could probably be dealt with.

I just right clicked on the device icon and ejected the cd and that worked like it was supposed to. But when I put it back dolphin doesn't show any audio devices.

edit: It finally showed up again. But it doesn't show that it contains ANY files and there are 20 songs on that cd.

You didn't follow the search instructions correctly .....  but never mind, the info is there .....

..  you could try installing    kde-multimedia-audiocd-kio   to see if it would make any difference .....  in truth this is more grasping at straws than any properly reasoned suggestion .....

The following might provide some information that would be useful to someone looking at this ..

in a terminal do the following two commands and copy & paste the complete terminal session in your next post. Thanks.

ls /dev/cd*

ls /dev/dvd*

Adding the new thing didn't help and apparently I am not doing something right entering those commands--are those l (the letter L in lower case) at the beginning of the command? And the *, never seen a command use that (but then I have never seen too many and surely not all there are to see).

Checked the dolphin just now and it is now showing the songs on the cd but still won't play them. It (the drive) is clicking like it is trying to read the disc but not having any luck. Here is the error message I got.

Ah, so it is indeed reading the media.

OK, I should now ask if this is the only media you have tried?

Can you try several audio CDs in the drive and see if there is a difference in behaviour?

I tried several cd's and dvd's in it, some of which I recorded myself and some that were professionally done. The only one that worked, and I didn't watch it all because it is a full-length movie, was The Matrix. The file association I clicked on was VTS_01_VOB-VLC....

I don't know if any of that is helpful or not. Most of them weren't even recognized, at least that devices thing didn't come on with them.

I wonder ......  you don't have a "cleaner" media to run in that drive, do you?

I am having difficulty getting a pattern from what is happening .....  dirt on the lens might account for some things ......

I had hoped to hear some more suggestions from others .......

No, I don't have one but maybe I can get one. Do you think a new dvd drive would be better? They don't cost a lot anymore, at least most of them don't. I have two in mine but iirc one of them is an older one that has IDE connectors (I think) and I had to disable it because the door kept popping open every few seconds without being told to open or without me pushing the button to make it open. And I have no IDE cables so it is pretty much useless anyway.
