Other question, which DE you are using?DE (kde4, lxde, xfce or...)When you put an audio cd in your drive, is it mounted by default? Open a devicemanager, and ask you what you want to do?Can you hear any sound from your system, youtube plays fine?
Did you have devicemanager started in your panel?I'm not fit on kde, but i think you have to start this applet...
