update left VLC broken
« on: November 16, 2012, 02:29:26 PM »
I just did an system update and after when I tried to watch a movie in VLC i got a warning box saying
" Audio Output Failed

The audio device "default" could not be used:
Connection refused."

The video plays normally just no sound.

I tried several different types of movies and even a few Mp3 audio files but none worked. I also tried all other output options in the VLC settings with no change.
I also tried the same audio files with clementine and they played normally so Id say it definitely something the update did to VLC rather than a sound problem in general, I just don't know where to look.

Think you have to reconfig the vlc settings  first.

Thank you for the reply John_w.
Exactly how do you mean reconfigure the settings? I tried deleting the /home/me/.config/vlc folder and it made a new one, and on starting vlc i got the dialogs like it was running for the first time but same problem persists.

Prior to doing this I also tried an complete uninstall the a new install.

I'll look for a config file in /usr and try deleting that if I find one but any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can reconfig the settings in extras menu -> preferences

Have also VLC 2.0.3 on my system and had to reconfigure there also.
Seems updating VLC goes to to default settings.

At the risk of sounding dim what do you mean the "extras menu"?

Ive installed other media players which all work perfectly so its definitely a VLC issue.

I can live with one of the other players but truthfully would rather use VLC.

Guess the extras menu is in English -> tools menu. :)

VLC's latest version in win7 is a bit buggy too.

I have version 2.0.3-2.  I haven't had to configure it and it has sound.

Same version here, I had sound, but it was buggy in that changing vlc's sound level would also change the master sound level... VLC at 200%? Kmix also at 200% :o Deactivating pulse audio via pclos control centre fixed it - maybe you should look into your sound configuration?

On my tower... If I deactivate pulseaudio, I loose my soundcard.  It is a Sound blaster audio xtreme.

 VLC - Tools - Preferences .....  audio tab .....  Output Module .....

Try changing the output module to see if you get a different result .....  maybe Alsa Audio Output
