VLC and AUdio problems after update to KDE 4.9.2

A week ago I could watch an avi or mp4 file with VLC even when logged in a root. After the painful update, no sound, Youtube on Firefox will not play any video or audio, and I have no system sounds.

Now, when I try to watch a mp4, the vlc tile just bounces a few times and disappears.

If you ask me to give some system data, please be specific as to what commands I need to run to get what you need.

Have you KDE multimedia packages installed?

Open synaptic, click on search, and type in KDE multimedia.

What sound system are you using Alsa, Oss, pulse audio? To find out got to, Configure Your Desktop>Hardware>Multimedia and click on Phonon.

Try installing Kmix, that should give you some control over your sound.

Why would you want them to?

You should do those things while running in a user account, NOT while running as root.

IIRC, VLC will refuse to run as root in any case ....

VLC is not supposed to be run as root. Sorry.
If you need to use real-time priorities and/or privileged TCP ports
you can use vlc-wrapper (make sure it is Set-UID root and
cannot be run by non-trusted users first).
