Thunderbird 16.0 1 from repositories

I have just updated this laptop, and in the process, upgraded Thunderbird to 16.0 1. It will not start from the icon in the panel; from the entry in the LXDE menu; or from a terminal.

This is the message that appears when I try to run Thunderbird from a terminal:

[jim@localhost ~]$ thunderbird
/usr/lib/thunderbird-16.0.1/thunderbird: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/thunderbird-16.0.1/libxul.so: undefined symbol: PR_SetCurrentThreadName
 
I noticed the same problem with this laptop when I changed over to KDE and updated that installation.
Therefore, this morning, I used a backup DVD of my LXDE installation on the laptop, to do a fresh install. Thunderbird worked perfectly, until I then went into the repositories and upgraded both Thunderbird and Firefox to their respective latest versions.


The annoying point is that, on my Dell desktop, also updated the other day, Thunderbird 16.0 1 works flawlessly.

Further to report:

This evening, I installed LXDE again to the laptop (Asus Pro59 LE) and upgraded Firefox to 16.0.2. However, I have left Thunderbird at the previous version 14.0 . Result is that I can, again, use Thunderbird.

Thank you for your efforts on my behalf. I think, at this stage, I will stay with the version that I am currently using. It works well.

I've got the same message as I upgrade Thunderbird from 14 to 17. Thanks to ternor link, I managed to downgrade to 15 version, and that works fine.

Never upgrade a single application. Always upgrade your system as a whole, weekly or monthly at worst. All packages are interdependent and can only work reliably with others for which they were built.

From version 15 it may be possible to update to 16 then 17.

I have a link to a post in these forums about pinning a version.  Because Thunderbird is an optional program I doubt that it has any dependencies.  There is a command to disclose that in a terminal.

Pardon me for hijacking this tread, but.............

I wouldn't mind if we had ....getThunderbird....and....getFirefox....
just like we have already ...getVirtualbox

That is, of course, if that would be possible to do as far as packaging is concerned or in other words, keeping peace with Synaptic

Just an idea, as I too have sometimes problems with TB and FF

I hope you're joking. The whole point of pclos is its ease of use for the ordinary user combined with its rolling upgrade system. It's bad enough having two applications that need special work by the user to upgrade them, any more and it would become unmanageable for the ordinary user. Most of us have better things to do with our time than launch successive scripts and wait for them to finish.

As a newcomer of 6 years, I was not aware of that   

It's bad enough having two applications that need special work ...............

There is nothing bad about, as a limited amount of users possibly use those 2 appz

Most of us have better things to do with our time than launch successive scripts and wait for them to finish.

That's why I suggessted it.
I have better things to do than every time FF or TB gets updated , trying to remember where in preferences I have to go to click certain settings and try and try again in order FF to open when I click on a link in TB

OK, now I have to go.
