I can't play any files, I don't have any sound. I can put a cd in my dvd drive and it says no disc (KsCD). As for speakers I have two little Logitech speakers (cheap ones) and they are hooked together. One cable goes to the computer for both of them.

What do you mean you can't play any files?

If you mean you cannot hear what is playing, then of course I know that .....  that is the problem I have been trying to address.

Please follow the instructions I gave.

Sorry, I don't understand the instructions you gave me. I don't get any of that stuff showing on anything I click on.

In that case you need to post a few pics of what you do have, cause I must have totally misunderstood your replies to now.

I suppose that is possible. ImageShack finally recognized that I no longer had 500 image files and allowed me to post another one. Here is the configuration pic.

Here is another picture which may, or may not, be helpful.

Good .....  now change the two entries on that pic to Stereo Output by selecting it from the drop down menu

BTW ....  to take a better pic use Ksnapshot & "Window under cursor"

I do use Ksnapshot. I tried with this picture to do what you suggested, window under cursor, and all that showed up in the picture were the icons on the bottom of my screen (for firefox, thunderbird, etc.). Anyway, here is the picture after I changed to what I believe I understood you to say.

I tried a cd after I did that and it still doesn't make a peep.

Good, now start something playing ....  something long lasting .........  and while it is playing, go to the output tab of PulseAudio Volume Control ......  and there change some settings.

There should be a horizontal volume control slider and a similar box to those on the Config Tab, from which you can choose which card should get the output ......  while the audio is still playing these will show, else they will not.

You should bring the volume up so the variation is about half way and choose one card and then the other.

The correct card should give the sound to the speakers.

Please report that

1.  you are seeing the volume indicator on the playback slider vary with the audio you are playing

2.  whether or not you are hearing the sound from the speakers on one of the cards.

EDIT:
If you see the volume level varying, and hear no sound from the speakers, then you should check that the speakers are connected to the correct socket on the sound card.
If in doubt try a couple of them with the sound playing .....

Did you have the mouse cursor on the PulseAudio Control window that you wished to take the pic of?

I would suggest not .....

It appears that everything is muted but if I click on it it doesn't change.

And no, I don't hear any sound other than the cd/dvd drive clicking--I guess that means it is reading the file.

The audio sliders wouldn't move on the one marked HDMI.

Sorry I used the incorrect terminology ......  my directions were for the Playback tab

In the picture the HDMI output is muted and the top one is not. Unmute both.

When muted the 'mute' icon will have a shadow around it, and the volume slider names for that device will be greyed out.

In either case, when sound is playing you should see a blue indicator going from left to right with the audio sounds on one of the devices (when they are unmuted).

Try also playing a youtube music video ....  to see if you can see the volume indicator

You should use the Playback Tab in preference

I do have sound now with youtube videos. My cd/dvd drive is still not playing any music for me but at least I can listen to music on youtube now. Thank you very much.

Now go back to the Configuration Tab and turn off the HDMI device.

Also, if you have any audio files on your PC try playing them with a media player ....  they should play through the speakers.

When you are satisfied that all other sounds are working you should start a new thread about the CD/DVD player .....  but before you do, try playing that media with another player such as VLC.

If another player works then the problem is with Kscd and not with your system.

I don't have even one audio file on my computer. Haven't had it up and running long enough. I muted the HDMI--don't know if that is what you meant or not but I saw no way to turn it off per se. And I tried vlc with my cd I have been trying to get to play now for the last couple of days but it didn't work either.

Also, I tried skype and I still have lots of static on it and can't hear what I tried to record. I hear their part of the recording through the static and distortion but it's like I never said anything. But I am still glad that I can finally listen to some music on youtube.

You muted the HDMI on what TAB of PulseAudio?

The Configuration Tab should give you the option to turn it Off from the drop-down menu.
Muting the device is of no use ....  it could still be used and you would hear no sound again.
