Just to be clear; you have installed the Full Version of PCLInuxOS 2012.8 KDE (4.8.3)?
Assuming that you do have Pulse Audio installed and chosen a non-HDMI sound driver in PCC, what do you see when you open desktop Volume?
(Right click - Volume Icon > Right click -Mixer) as Shadow Man indicated.
Hopefully something like this.

Notice that I have 2 tabs for sound devices; my on-board sound card, and my usb webcam/mic.
Capturing audio refers to input (microphone or line-in analog audio/music recording).
Somewhere you must have Master Volume selected; correct?

Again, just trying to be helpful.  :)

I understand that you are trying to be helpful. I DID have a panel that looked very much like that until the "computer techs" I took it to "fixed" it. Apparently now I don't have anything that will capture streams and don't have any capture devices. I wish I hadn't taken it over there--they charged me what, to me, was a lot of money and made my problem worse than it was.

Simplest answer at this stage, IMO, is to install

task-pulsraudio  EDIT:  task-pulseaudio           and
pavucontrol

Go to PCC (Configure your computer) - Hardware - Sound Configuration and enable PulseAudio.
Reboot

On restart launch PulseAudio Control from the Sound menu

On the configuration tab disable the HDMI device
Select Duplex Stereo for the on board sound card.

Playback an audio file and adjust the sliders and mute buttons so it plays through the speakers.

When recording, use the Recording tab to ensure the app is recording from the correct source.

Thank you. I went into synaptic to get the stuff you mentioned and it said no package is selected for that task-pulsraudio. I did get the second one, the pavucontrol.

I did find a task-pulseaudio. Is it the same thing? There is also a task-pulseaudio-remove. And I checked, PulseAudio is already enabled.

Ok, got it. Playback is showing muted and I can't "unmute" it. And it says No input devices available.

Can you post a pic of the configuration tab of PulseAudio Control please?

...  you need to store it somewhere and link to it in your post

It would look something like this ....  with less devices no doubt .....

That is not the configuration tab  :(

I noticed that after I posted it--unfortunately, ImageShack is telling me that I have over 500 photos and won't upload any more. I deleted some so I could upload the picture of the configuration tab but apparently you would probably have to start a new account under a different name and email address to upload more (or pay a premium to them). I can tell you what the configuration tab shows though, it is so little it is easy.

Built-In Audio

Profile: Off (this is the top one, the one for HDMI which I don't have)

Built-In Audio

Profile: Analog Surround 5.1 Output

Would it be better/easier if I just installed fresh and started over? At this point I don't know what to do and don't know whether I would gain anything by doing that or not.

Before you give up I would reboot your system if you haven't done so since you installed Pulseaudio.

You should see this upon a reboot.

If so, click on Manage Devices and you should see this to select hardware.

How many speakers do you have connected?  Two?
Change the second one to Stereo out if so.

Set the first one to Analogue Stereo Out if the option is present. If only Digital options present themselves leave it off.

Play an audio file and go to the Playback tab.
With the file playing you should get an option for volume slider so you can see if audio is being routed to the selected audio card (drop-down on that tab if more than one card enabled) ....  you can enable the Digital/HDMI card on the config tab to see this choice.

On the Output Devices Tab, make sure that you can see a visual indication of the audio playing.
Make adjustments if necessary.

Because there is no indication as yet that a reinstall would help, I do not see the point ......  what it might do is cause you to start all over again trying to find the cause of the problem.

I saw that first one earlier (I think) about devices being removed and asking me about forgetting them. I checked no because I had no idea what had been removed or why. But I have rebooted again since then and I didn't get anything like that. So I don't know. Right now I am downloading the iso file again assuming that it is up to date and just in case I decide that I have no alternative but to start over. Man, how I wish I had not taken my computer to that "shop."

I can't play any files, I don't have any sound. I can put a cd in my dvd drive and it says no disc (KsCD). As for speakers I have two little Logitech speakers (cheap ones) and they are hooked together. One cable goes to the computer for both of them.

What do you mean you can't play any files?

If you mean you cannot hear what is playing, then of course I know that .....  that is the problem I have been trying to address.

Please follow the instructions I gave.
