Please see if you can locate the directly from the ASUS motherboard. It is usually located between the PCi slots, or perhaps another place close by. Also see if there is a Ver # for it..
Thanks

Hi and thanks for trying to help. I powered it down and checked it and what I could see in there without a magnifying glass was PCIe 2.0 X 16 and there was a number there with a check mark by it that was N 13219. I don't know if any of that will tell you anything.

That comes up as a possible3 HO/Compaq motherboard.....But, look on the board for something like this:: ASUS A8MZZN-LA  (might be different)
This board also has many drivers available. I didn't see any listed as for Linux, but that doesn't mean much either...
I am looking for the BIOS instruction set, to see if it can be updated or not..

Might also be this Number: A8M2N-LA and might require removing the Graphics card to see....

The number on mine says ASUS F1A75-M.

Also note, the reason for the manual, wasn't meant to fix your problem, but if I remember correctly you said you didn't have one, so I thought I'd try to help.

I am still looking through my stuff here to see if I can locate the past sound problems I encountered. I have seen them be colored/labeled wrong in the...(horrors, a mfg. makes a mistake??)  :-\ ;D

I tried it in the one that it always worked in before and, hoping against hope, I also tried it in the one directly above it. No sound from either one. I will have to say though that whether I get this fixed or not I really do appreciate all of you who have gone out of your way to try to help me. The reputation the pclos forum has for friendliness is well deserved imo.

There are people on these forums much more knowledgeable and experienced than I in these matters...But I will try to help when and where i can..I also think this can be fixed too....of course, I been wrong before..  ;D We will give it a good try...
Ok, you have tried that, now is there any possibility the volume in turned way down? I know sometimes the volume is set to almost 0% after installing or updating, or maybe a mute box ticked.. I also have found that un-powered speakers are weak on most motherboards...(note: these are all the duh type questions, and are not meant to question your knowledge) just trying to cover the easy things first, (its the easy one that all most all ways gets me)  ::)
I can remember a time of working many,,ah,,,,, nevermind!  ;) ;D

The volume indicator on the front panel (the little speaker icon) is showing 100%. I haven't clicked on anything to mute the speakers. And I know you were not asking "duh" questions to say "wow, are you ignorant!" LOL. I have a ready reply to that, one I have told most everyone who has ever said that to me--"We are all ignorant, just about different things." But honestly, I have forgotten much of what I used to know about Linux and I never have had any super great knowledge of it. But I did indeed check to make sure everything was plugged in and searched a lot before I posted the thread. I know there must be an answer somewhere, one that doesn't require me to use gnome and most certainly not use what the guys who "fixed" it said I might have to use.

Ok, was just making sure..I do get rebuffed on occasion for being to direct and sharp...trying to correct those attributes too.. :-\  ;D ;D

You may have tried this all ready, but I'll ask anyway.  I assume ( :D) you are running the KDE desktop...if so, on the sound icon on the task-bar
right click, then choose "Audio Setup" should open a window listing the default audio playback preference.
There should be a item (s) listed. then pick one, and click the test button..(may have to click it to stop the test) The try another one if listed.
There is a button (lower left) labeled "Show Advanced Devices" click it. see if anything else is added to the window. Try the same test as above,,

Also, leave this window open the right click the sound icon again and select the , "Select Master Channel" button. Usually 'master" is selected.

Perhaps one of these will help... :)

One of the things I clicked on informed me that some devices had been removed (not by me, at least not intentionally). The list it gave was:

Output: Ensoniq Audio PCI ENS 1371 (ES 1371, DAC2/ADC)

Output: Ensoniq Audio PCI, ES 1371 (DAC2/ADC) and this is referred to as the default audio device

Another thing I found was:

Built-in Audio Analog Surround Sound 5.1 and it was on

Built-in Audio Digital Stereo (HDMI) and that was off

Oh yeah, your assumption about the KDE is correct. I like it better than any other interface I have tried.

I also forgot to mention this but it said: This is the list of devices KDE thinks can be removed and I said no. I don't know at this point what can be removed--I did turn off the HDMI since I don't even have an HDMI cable.

Ok, no sound from any of the test function... ?
Ok one more thing before running up the white flag for tonight:
Click the sound icon and then "Mixer" check the setting on all 4 sliders, the one on the right is normally at the bottom, slide it up at least half way...then check the little sound icons at the bottom to be sure they are turned on.
Close it, then see if you get any sound..if not we are going to have to look at the driver (s) might have to wait til tomorrow to do that, getting late here.. ;)

What I found is that nothing is capturing audio. Only two sliders showing. Those are Built-in Audio Digital Stereo (HDMI which I have muted) and Built-in Audio Analog Surround 5.1 which is not muted. My volume icon is now showing 88% but I have not set anything to change it from 100%, at least I was unaware of it if I did.

It's getting late here too and I am going to turn in soon. Thank you, everyone who has tried to help. I appreciate it.

Just to be clear; you have installed the Full Version of PCLInuxOS 2012.8 KDE (4.8.3)?
Assuming that you do have Pulse Audio installed and chosen a non-HDMI sound driver in PCC, what do you see when you open desktop Volume?
(Right click - Volume Icon > Right click -Mixer) as Shadow Man indicated.
Hopefully something like this.

Notice that I have 2 tabs for sound devices; my on-board sound card, and my usb webcam/mic.
Capturing audio refers to input (microphone or line-in analog audio/music recording).
Somewhere you must have Master Volume selected; correct?

Again, just trying to be helpful.  :)
